Description of Work
POSITION PURPOSE
The Assistive Technology Teacher is primarily responsible to the Principal of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) for providing specialized instruction consultation and support in assistive technology for students with visual impairments. This position focuses on equipping students with the technology skills tools and strategies necessary to access the curriculum develop independence and prepare for postsecondary education employment and independent living. The Assistive Technology Teacher collaborates with instructional staff related service providers families and external agencies to ensure appropriate selection implementation and effective use of assistive technology aligned with students individualized needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow all School Board and GMS policies and procedures.
Provide direct instruction to students in the use of assistive technology to support access to the curriculum and daily tasks.
Provide direct instruction to students in the use of word processing slide presentations spreadsheets and other productivity apps.
Conduct assistive technology assessments and contribute recommendations to IEPs and instructional planning.
Train students in the use of screen readers braille technology magnification devices accessible software and emerging technologies.
Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate assistive technology into instruction and classroom routines.
Provide consultation coaching and technical support to staff regarding accessibility and assistive technology implementation.
Support students in developing independence self-advocacy and problem-solving skills related to technology use.
Maintain accurate records related to assessments services equipment use and student progress.
Assist with selection setup maintenance and troubleshooting of assistive technology devices and software.
Coordinate with families vendors and outside agencies regarding assistive technology needs and services.
Participate in IEP meetings staff meetings professional development and school-based committees as required.
Stay current with emerging assistive technologies and best practices in the field of visual impairment.
Adhere to district policies procedures and the North Carolina Code of Ethics for Educators.
Support and uphold the mission vision and values of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind.
Other duties as assigned by the administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong knowledge of assistive technology tools and software for individuals with visual impairments including screen readers magnification software braille note-taking devices and accessible mobile technology.
- In-depth understanding of instructional strategies for students who are blind or visually impaired.
- Ability to assess student needs and recommend appropriate assistive technology solutions.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards digital accessibility and universal design for learning.
- Ability to teach students to use assistive technology to access academic content assessments and daily living tasks.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers related service providers administrators families and community partners.
- Ability to provide professional development and coaching to staff on assistive technology and accessibility.
- Ability to monitor student safety and well-being while using technology and adaptive equipment.
- Friendly and able to interact professionally and positively with staff students parents and community members.

- Strong technology skills including use of PowerPoint Excel Word email text phone and other common workplace applications or tools.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educators License in Visual Impairment (K12) or Special Education with demonstrated expertise in assistive technology.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a valid North Carolina Professional Educators License in Visual Impairment (K12).
Formal training or certification in Assistive Technology.
Experience working in a school setting serving students who are blind or visually impaired.
Experience collaborating on IEP teams and conducting assistive technology assessments.
WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to use a variety of office equipment such as computers scanners and copiers. Must be able to communicate effectively. At times requires the ability to lift carry push pull or otherwise objects up to ten pounds. The work requires frequent operation of automotive equipment. Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking physical requirements are consistent with those for sedentary work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to work in an office environment and come into direct contact with school/district staff families and members of the community.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Education Special Education Visual Impairment Assistive Technology Educational Technology or a related field.
