The Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Land Resources has a current vacancy for an Environmental Specialist III. The position will perform shoreland zoning duties in the Bangor office.

Salary: $25.43 - $35.68 Per Hour*

*(This includes a 7.33% Salary Adjustment)

*This is the earning potential over the course of nine steps. New hires will generally start at Step 1. Annual step increases are based on performance reviews and financial authorization.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Mandatory Shoreland Zoning Act in eastern and northern Maine. The successful candidate will conduct site visits conduct SLZ trainings evaluate municipal ordinances assist municipalities and pursue formal enforcement actions. The position must effectively communicate regulatory information with a wide variety of audiences provide excellent customer service ensure timely accurate and consistent action on SLZ issues and assist with drafting guidance documents and rules. This position also must work well as part of team and be able to coordinate and collaborate with managers in other regional offices. The individual in this position must have both strong problem-solving skills and conflict resolution skills and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. This is a full-time position located in Bangor and allows for partial telework with management approval.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental biological physical science or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.

Preference will be given to candidates with skills and/or experience in:

  • Experience with or knowledge of the concepts and techniques involved in natural resources protection and/or management.
  • Experience with or knowledge of environmental regulatory programs at the federal state or local level.
  • GIS/database management and other computer skills including PowerPoint Access and publishing software.
  • Field work experience in identifying natural resources including wetland identification or furtherance of the administration of a regulatory program.
  • Experience in interpersonal relationships and/or customer service in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience in training others and public presentation skills.
