Job Summary

Job Summary/Basic Function:

Provide case management and alternative format support to a blind student by assisting with research review and identifying materials that require conversion. Primarily provide visual assistance to complete dissertation requirements. Produce or support the creation of alternative formats including text files LaTeX-formatted mathematical content and detailed image descriptions for figures diagrams and charts. Assist with formatting dissertation materials tracking inaccessible citations obtaining necessary source information and applying proper citation styles using citation management tools. Support the integration and description of images within dissertation documents to ensure accessibility and academic accuracy.

Department Overview:

The Educational Access Center (EAC) at Boise State University provides accommodations to ensure students with disabilities have equitable access to academic programs and campus life. The EAC works collaboratively with students faculty and staff to implement individualized accommodations and foster a learning environment that supports student access and independence.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills policies and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:

Case Management & Alternative Format Support:
Assist to explore research with the student as a sighted assistant to determine what research to request in Alternative Format and potentially produce or assist with production of the Alternative Format. This may include text files LaTeX formatting for math expressions and/or image descriptions for figures/diagrams/charts/etc.
Assist to format dissertation materials with the student.
Assist tracking of inaccessible citations with the student.
Acquire information needed from source and assist student to apply formal citation formatting. This may include assistance using citation management tools.
Assist to describe and add images to dissertation materials with the student.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

An ideal candidate would be someone who has a strong background in theoretical computer science and mathematics with comfort in formal proofs and notation.
Familiarity with LaTeX for academic writing.
Research literacy: ability to critically read interpret and summarize academic papers.

MinimumQualifications:

Experience completing a dissertation.
Background in theoretical computer science and mathematics with comfort in formal proofs and notation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with humans with disabilities specifically sensory disabilities (hearing vision).
Ability to describe visual/structural elements clearly in text or verbally.
Willingness to learn MathSpeak approaches to verbalizing math notation.
Technical abilities - knowledge of general computer accessibility capabilities.
Salary and Benefits:
The hourly rate is $25/hour.
