MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR HEAVY- 2 ROCKEFELLER WILDLIFE REFUGE

The incumbent of position should possess skilled and semi-skilled abilities to perform duties at the 70000 acre Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in coastal southwest Louisiana. The refuge has over 200 miles of waterways approximately 150 miles of levees (which provides a controlled environment within wildlife management units) and over 40 water control structures. This job also requires the incumbent to work at other Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries properties on occasion including the 70000-acre White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area in Vermilion parish. The Refuge is in a coastal environment in which mosquitos and other pests are common. Climatic conditions and semi-fluid soils unique to this area make the job physically demanding. The incumbents job requires lifting objects over 50 pounds and work periodically demands endurance.


Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience in mobile equipment operations.

Job Duties and Other Information

JOB DUTIES

The incumbent is responsible for the following:

Heavy Mobile Equipment Operation

  • Operate all heavy equipment needed to complete Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries job assignments.
  • Operate a land based track excavator to build levees roads and any other project requiring heavy equipment.
  • Operate an amphibious track excavator clearing drainage ditches and building/repairing levees and terraces in remote locations which will not support conventional draglines and track excavators.
  • Operate various bull dozers in construction and repair projects.
  • Operate spud barge and dragline to build and shape levees drive piling install water control structures and load and unload heavy materials from barges and trucks. Assists with maintenance and repair of mobile heavy equipment including injectors starters pumps hydraulic cylinders tracks and chains.
  • Primary work location is at Rockefeller Refuge but is required to periodically travel to other Refuges and Management Areas of the Department to assist with construction projects.
  • Conduct routine daily checks and maintenance on equipment being operated.

Habitat Manipulation and Management

  • Operate marsh master and various other heavy equipment to improve habitat conditions on the refuge. The incumbent will need to be proficient in the operation of boats and airboats to access the work sites on the refuge. Assist with and operate the heavy equipment used to maintain and run the water control structures.
  • Assist the habitat manager in making the most efficient and cost saving work plan by communicating their expertise of heavy equipment operations used in marsh manipulation.
  • Assist in the collection of environmental data used to make informative decisions of the habitat needs on the refuge.

Equipment /Material Transport General Construction Repair and Maintenance

  • Assist personnel with repair projects when not operating heavy equipment.
  • Uses a variety of portable power and hand tools to perform duties with limited supervision.
  • Assist with seining of fish ponds and transporting fish.
  • Assist with operating East End Locks.
