Job Summary

The Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation is seeking a leader to contribute to the success of the department by providing administrative oversight of the UI Work Injury Recovery Center (WIRC) and serve as the Division Administrator for some orthopedic service lines. This position will supervise and manage day-to-day operations in the WIRC clinic including daily provider clinical activity all prior authorizations for Ortho Workers Comp treatment and all medical-legal communications including billing and collections for medical-legal reporting and consultations. The will also work with faculty to support service line needs. Duties include:

  • Manage daily operations of orthopedic clinical practice.

  • Manage clinical and administrative support staff.

  • Direct billing and collections for all medical-legal consulting work. Advise and manage billing dispute issues.

  • Support the University of Iowas workers compensation practice including management of thirteen physicians and managing WIRCs clinical practice. Integration and expansion of WIRC services across multiple hospital divisions and clinics patient management and regular negotiations with physicians insurers and legal counsel.

  • Draft budgets manage expenses and revenue and monitor financial performance. Management of departmental fee schedule for medical-legal work. Ongoing monitoring of clinical productivity and budgets to ensure targets are met. Working with Medical Director to develop and implement incentives for increasing MD participation/productivity.

  • Develop and execute marketing strategies for established practice and new markets for UI WIRC.

  • Monitor patient volume identify trends that need to be addressed with patients and third party payers and develop strategies to manage steadily increasing growth of service line including improving provider clinic schedules recruiting additional providers to the WIRC implementation of new strategies to improve patient satisfaction. Develop strategies to continue growth and space needs.

  • Independently and in conjunction with the Medical Director responsible for reporting of clinical productivity and revenue growth to the Department Chair Department Administrator Assistant VP for Strategic Planning and UIHC Cabinet. Use financial analysis to advocate for staffing and resource needs of the WIRC. Communicate with outside entities including patients their representatives insurers employers and other interested parties regarding both individual patient issues and strategic partnerships and initiatives.

  • Develop and implement policies to standardize and centralize billing and collections.

  • Conduct and utilize research in workers compensation areas including cost-benefit analysis return to work patterns and efficacy of treatments.

  • Serve on Clinical Management Team and other Ortho Department leadership groups as needed.

Provide Division Administrator support for the faculty practice in some Orthopedic Services Lines. Related duties include:

  • Assist with budget projections including RVUS for current faculty and APPs as well as departing and hired faculty and APPs.

  • Provide regular financial updates to division directors.

  • Manage KPIs to meet goals.

  • Identify trends and determine QA priorities and recommends QA and patient/customer satisfaction strategies.

  • Review clinical operation activities and make recommendations for changes in or better utilization of facilities services and staff. Work to improve patient referral mechanism between all clinical departments.

  • Identify needs trends and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care.

  • Identify problems of health care delivery propose innovative ways for their resolution and successfully implement accepted proposals.

  • Provide input into action plans for unit that meet strategic goals; provide progress reports to department director.

  • Advocate for needs of unit with healthcare leaders; may collaborate with faculty and departmental leadership of unit regarding program development process improvements and equipment budgets.

Education Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Business Healthcare Administration or related field or

  • Bachelors Degree in Business Healthcare Administration or related field or equivalent experience

Required Experience:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Supervisory experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Suite (Word Excel Power Point)

Desired Experience:

  • Knowledge of workers Compensation claims and related administrative process

  • Experience working with EPIC

  • Experience working in a health care setting
