Role Overview

The Welfare Officer will work directly with students to support their emotional social and behavioural wellbeing. This is a highly student-centred role requiring empathy resilience and strong safeguarding awareness.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support to students experiencing challenges

  • Conducting welfare check-ins and pastoral conversations

  • Supporting students with SEMH needs

  • Working closely with Heads of Year and the safeguarding team

  • Recording concerns and interventions using safeguarding systems

  • Liaising with parents carers and external agencies

  • Supporting behaviour management strategies and restorative practices

  • Contributing to wellbeing initiatives and school-wide programmes

  • Assisting with safeguarding investigations where appropriate

  • Attending multi-agency meetings when required

The role requires professionalism confidentiality and a proactive approach to supporting vulnerable students.

Pastoral & Safeguarding Team Information

The Welfare Officer will be part of a well-established pastoral team that includes the Designated Safeguarding Lead Deputy DSLs counsellors and Heads of Year. The team meets regularly to review student needs and implement targeted interventions.

The school provides training in safeguarding mental health awareness and trauma-informed practice.

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience working with young people in a welfare pastoral or safeguarding role

  • Strong understanding of safeguarding principles

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to build trust and rapport with students

  • Resilience and emotional intelligence

  • Strong record-keeping and confidentiality standards

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team
