The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking HeavyEquipment Mechanic 2s in the Olympic Region (OR) Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) organization. These positions are responsible for performing journey-level inspection troubleshooting diagnosing servicing and making major and minor mechanical repairs on all types of equipment used in highway maintenance. Olympic Region TEF provides well maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe efficient timely and cost-effective manner. The primary function of these positions are to perform all aspects of Preventative Maintenance (PM) and repair duties on all inventoried equipment within the Olympic Regions area of responsibility.
What to Expect
These positions may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies on weekends and holidays. They must be able to report in service to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. This position may be required to work alternate and emergency shifts as situations dictate and respond to emergency conditions in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day 7 days a week alone or part of a team as needed.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role the HeavyEquipment Mechanic 2 will:
- Inspect diagnose and make needed repairs to equipment such as vehicles over 15000 GVW mechanical equipment such as specialty trucks power shovels graders backhoes dozers heavy trucks and accessories snow blowers loaders rollers sweepers oil distributors catch basin cleaners and all other state-owned equipment used in highway maintenance and engineering.
- Use digital MultiMate and scanning tools to diagnose and repair computer-controlled fuel systems (both diesel and gas) steering and suspension systems hydraulic and air brake systems including anti-lock brake systems electronic windshield wiper traction control devices heating and cooling systems seasonal checkups steam cleaning washing major/minor tune-ups and adjustments installs and repairs WAF (wireless Automate Fueling) system and fabrication and installation of all related parts and components of numerous systems.
- Perform machinist body and glass repair and welding fabrication work; Fabricate brackets attachments and specialized equipment attachments; Paint and perform touch up paint.
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on all WSDOT equipment and vehicles to ensure reliability of equipment for user groups. Perform PM to detect and repair safety items on equipment to reduce field down time and to extend the service life of equipment.
- Operate computer to maintain shop records initiate work orders order parts and communicate order status.
- Analyze agency-wide industrial/commercial and agency specialized equipment and contract vehicle needs and usage.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- Heavy Equipment Maintenance Repair & Operation: Demonstrated skills to inspect diagnose and repair small large and heavy equipment used in highway maintenance and engineering; skills to operate operates and road tests class A B and C vehicles and other equipment.
- Preventive Maintenance & Equipment Reliability: Experience performing preventive maintenance on small large and heavy equipment. Skilled in identifying and correcting safety issues to minimize downtime extend service life and ensure equipment availability for field operations.
- Safety Awareness & Compliance: Thorough knowledge of occupational safety requirements and commitment to safe work practices in shop and field environments. Experience applying safety standards when working with heavy machinery welding equipment and hazardous materials. Ability to implement and participate in safety programs training and Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP).
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently. Experience contributing to a work environment that fosters a culture of respect and equal opportunity.
- Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in the use of Fleet Equipment Management software and standard computer applications (Excel Word Outlook). Proficient in reading and interpreting equipment manuals technical drawings and blueprints. Ability to maintain accurate repair and maintenance documentation.
- Licensing & Certification:Possession of an unrestricted valid drivers license to operate vehicles in Washington State. Required to obtain Class A CDL with N endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
- Tools and Equipment Readiness:Demonstrated ability to provide and safely use basic hand tools necessary to perform assigned job duties.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Commercial Vehicle Operation and Maintenance Compliance:Demonstrated ability to operate commercial vehicles and perform vehicle and equipment maintenance in compliance with applicable regulations including possession of a valid Washington State Class A CDL with required endorsements and no air brake restrictions ASE-certified repair capabilities and DOT-compliant brake inspection and certification.
- Mechanical and Technical Proficiency: Proven skill in performing complex mechanical work including troubleshooting hydraulic electrical and pneumatic systems and utilizing appropriate tools equipment and diagnostic technology.
- Fabrication and Welding Skills: Ability to perform welding fabrication and related metalwork to repair or modify heavy equipment and components in accordance with safety and quality standards.
- Journey-Level Mechanical Competency: Recognized expertise in heavy equipment or industrial/commercial mechanics demonstrating mastery of trade practices and adherence to established maintenance procedures and safety requirements.
- Power Tool Operation: Proficiency in operating shop tools such as welders drill presses grinders hoists jacks and air tools.
