Policy & Advocacy Fellow

A2 brings together supports and organizes alongside grassroots groups on the frontlines of climate change building collective power to fight for environmental protection and justice across the United States and its territories. We are the nations largest coalition of frontline communities representing more than 430 member groups.

We seek a full-time (40 hours/week) Policy and Advocacy Fellow to strengthen the policy power of frontline communities by transforming local and state environmental challenges into coordinated actionable advocacy campaigns.

This is a two-year position with the potential to become permanent pending sustained funding. The role is supported by the newly launched Strengthening Human Infrastructure Project (SHIP) at the Aspen Global Change Institute of which A2 is a core member. The position is primarily remote with a salary of $65000 plus benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Campaign Strategy & Networked Action

  • Analyze common advocacy campaigns led by A2 member organizations (e.g. flooding mining pollution) to determine where A2 can add value through cross-jurisdictional coordination strategic support like campaign planning and messaging development and shared advocacy tools.
  • Develop practical off-the-shelf campaign toolkits that members can implement at varying capacity levels including model ordinances sample legislation advocacy strategies messaging frameworks and talking points.
  • Identify and coordinate campaigns where members in multiple states can use the toolkits and align their advocacy efforts to amplify collective voice.
  • Organize and coordinate days of action engaging members across multiple states to amplify impact and increase visibility with policymakers and media.
  • Track campaign outcomes and policy milestones achieved by participating member organizations.

Member Training & Capacity Building

  • Lead trainings and provide coaching to A2 members on public policy and advocacy campaigns strengthening their ability to identify strategic opportunities engage effectively in state and local policy processes and build credibility with key decision-makers.
  • Provide tactical guidance to members engaging with specific decision-making bodies such as Public Service Commissions zoning boards and local or regional authorities.
  • Track and create opportunities for members to influence regulatory and legislative decisions at the local and state level through public comments testimony and advocacy actions. NOTE: This position will not directly engage in lobbying efforts.

Learning & Documentation

  • Facilitate peer-learning sessions where members share challenges and solutions to common policy issues.
  • Represent A2 within the SHIP coalition integrating coalition resources and expertise to benefit member campaigns while documenting and sharing A2s effective strategies and coordination approaches to support collective learning across the network.
  • Track member participation patterns support needs and coordination methods to continuously improve A2s collective action capacity

Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience in public policy advocacy community organizing or related fields preferably in environmental justice climate or social justice contexts.
  • Demonstrated understanding of state and local policy processes and how grassroots organizations engage them.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate complex policy landscapes into practical advocacy tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to develop clear accessible materials for diverse audiences.
  • Experience facilitating trainings workshops or group discussions particularly with community-based organizations.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects deadlines and collaborations simultaneously.
  • Collaborative working style and comfort working across a distributed member-led network.
  • Strong work ethic accountability and collaborative spirit with an ability to take initiative follow through on commitments and contribute positively to a team environment.
  • Commitment to environmental justice systems change and building power with frontline communities.
