ROVING SUBSTITUTE TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION
EDWARDSVILLE COMMUNITY UNIT DISTRICT #7
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. INSTRUCTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS
1. Follows the classroom teachers lesson plans and assumes any school duties that are the classroom teachers responsibility.
2. Communicates expectations for high levels of learning by students
2. Specifies lesson purposes and learning objectives
3. Teaches clearly audibly precisely and fluently while keeping to the topic
4. Teaches accurate principles concepts rationale and applications as well as specific content
5. Requires students to recall explain compare contrast and evaluate information
6. Provides students with prompt and appropriate feedback on their learning performance and progress
7. Re-teaches as necessary
8. Summarizes the main points of the lesson and brings closure to the lesson.
9. Encourages student input for improvement of instruction
B. ORGANIZATIONAL AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS
1. Follows procedures for routine classroom management matters communicates those procedures to students and elicits feedback from students regarding their understanding of those procedures
2. Follows teachers lesson plans
3. Distributes materials and supplies necessary for an instructional lesson in a timely manner
4. Starts students on tasks quickly and assures efficient transitions between activities
5. Maintains a high level of time-on-task for all students
6. Monitors student behavior continuously encouraging appropriate behavior and addresses inappropriate behavior
C. PERSONAL QUALITIES
1. Interacts with students in a mutually respectful manner
2. Expresses verbal enthusiasm for the lesson and student participation
3. Praises students for learning accomplishments on-task behaviors and appropriate conduct
4. Gives all students opportunities to ask questions contribute and otherwise participate in class activities
D. PROFESSIONAL DEMEANOR
1. Teaches the approved curriculum of the district
2. Maintains punctuality and regular attendance
3. Completes reports accurately and promptly. Prepares and leaves a written status report for the teacher of the lesson
plans completed and the groups accomplishments for that day.
4. Maintains appropriate communications with colleagues
5. Maintains accurate and helpful communication with students and parents
6. Takes steps toward self-improvement
7. Carries out other duties as assigned by supervisors
E. PROFESSIONAL PROCEDURES
1. Follows the classroom teachers regular workday hours for that building
2. Check in at the office before beginning assigned duties
3. Sign out at the office before leaving
4. Check and make sure assignments have been completed during the school day
5. Do not grade papers unless requested to do so by the classroom teacher
6. Maintain classroom discipline
Do not tolerate students being disrespectful or not following classroom rules
Do not hesitate to involve the administration should you find it necessary
Do not become combative or argumentative and do not physically handle any student under any circumstance
7. Keep the building principal apprised of any issues you encounter
8. Leave dry erase boards desks and other equipment in order
9. Leave a written note reporting any unusual experience or issues you encounter with a student during the day
10. Maintain all student parent and staff information in confidence
11. Classroom computers shall not be used for personal reasons under any circumstance
12. The classroom teachers personal items shall not be used unless prior authorization is received
13. Comply with all District 7 Board Policies and procedures
14. Permanent subs will be evaluated through the Districts evaluation process
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Appropriate Illinois Certification(s) multiple endorsements preferred
2. Superior work habits and ethics
3. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
4. Ability to work well with administration faculty students and parents
5. Ability to perform duties as outlined
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical requirements will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
*If a roving substitute teacher is in a long-term position for more than one week the permanent substitute will be responsible for all responsibilities on the teacher job description.
**All roving substitute teachers will be placed on the EEA salary schedule at Bachelors Step 1 regardless of educational experience or degrees. If the roving substitute is hired or moved into a different certified position they will receive all experience and education steps accumulated during their employment as a roving substitute teacher or from eligible previous employment in an Illinois Public School and will be placed in the appropriate row and column on the salary schedule upon the start of that new position.
