Job Description

The Head Coach of Mens and Womens Cross Country and Track and Field is a key member of the coaching team who provides leadership and vision within the Athletics Department as well as among the student athletes. The position is responsible for administering all aspects of the mens and womens cross country and track and field programs with a commitment to the University Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The position will be responsible for all aspects of the program(s) such as recruiting scheduling meets fundraising strength & conditioning developing annual service/engagement projects for student-athletes planning and preparation for meets and practices mentoring and evaluating student-athletes and academic monitoring. The position is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-San Antonio) the RRAC and the addition this person must be committed to the education mission of the University. Currently enrolling over 8000 students A&M-San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing universities in the state. A&M-San Antonio is set to open a $7 million multisport/track and field facility on campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development management and successful coaching of mens and womens cross country indoor track and field and outdoor track and field to include scheduling recruiting and equipment management.

  • Ensure strict adherence to all NAIA by-laws and RRAC regulations.

  • Ensure adherence with established institutional compliance rules policies and procedures as well as ethical standards of behavior.

  • Ensure satisfactory academic performance of student-athletes.

  • Effectively manage the programs budget and staff coordinate support services and appropriate public relations and promotional activities necessary for program success.

  • Establish and maintain effective interactions with the university community administrators alumni donors mediate and the public.

  • Responsible for successful coaching to include maximizing the teams potential/abilities keeping athletes eligible and retaining athletes through graduation.

  • Supervise and mentor coaching assistants.

  • Manage the operations of sports camps and/or clinics if applicable.

  • Manage all department fund-raising and booster events in accordance with NAIA RRAC and institutional rules policies and procedures. Learn understand and adhere to all NAIA guidelines and maintain up-to-date roster squad lists and other information.

  • Participate in long-range planning and assessment attend all departmental training sessions and meetings and read and comply with all departmental policy manuals.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervision Received/Given: Works under general supervision of the Athletic Department and will supervise assistant coaching staff.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or higher in related field.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education required.

  • Graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

  • Four (4) academic years or more as a head coach of an intercollegiate (NAIA NCAA and or NJCAA) cross country and or track and field program required; seven academic years or more as an assistant coach of an intercollegiate cross country and or track and field program or head coach at the high school level may be substituted.

  • History of successfully establishing an intercollegiate cross country and or track and field program(s) from the ground up.

  • Extensive meet management experience to include hosting meets.

  • Certification(s) from the USATF and or USTFCCCA.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of computers including databases.

  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Must possess strong public relations and interpersonal skills to interact effectively and professionally with University community outside community and the press.

  • Must possess a commitment to student learning and success as well as a dedication to growth development innovation and improvement.

  • Must possess commitment and capabilities to abide by NAIA and Conference rules.

  • Must have experience in program fundraising.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid Drivers license for transportation of student athletes.

  • Must be able to become CPR/First Aid certified.

  • Must be able to successfully pass the NAIA Rules Education Test within the appropriate time.

Other Requirements:

  • Position requires travel.

  • Position requires working evening and/or weekend hours.
