GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to providing a safe high-quality and efficient transportation system for the people of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician to join our Maintenance Program in scenic Rock Springs Wyoming.
This position offers a $2000 Hiring Bonus (See eligibility notes)
Work Location
This position is based in Rock Springs Wyoming and provides safety support and representation for all of WYDOT District 3. About Rock Springs Wyoming Rock Springs is the fifth-largest city in Wyoming and offers a high quality of life with abundant outdoor recreation including fishing biking hiking golfing and access to the nearby Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The community hosts an annual International Day festival celebrating cultural heritage through food costumes and traditions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.
- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Under limited supervision flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
- Operates heavy equipment including but not limited to single and tandem axle trucks equipped with an auger aerial lift equipment or equipped with plows wing plows sanders and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
- Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
- Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications perform inspections and learn new skills
- Communicates information in order to update others status and/or process effectiveness
- Utilizes computers for agency practices such as training and performance evaluations and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
- Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
- Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/ **AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.
**Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary.
**Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
**Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving.
**Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
**Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
- Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
- Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
- Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks loaders and tractors
- Knowledge of safe work procedures First Aid and CPR and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
- Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers calculators and telephones
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Associates Degree (typically in Engineering)
Experience:
0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
Certificates Licenses Registrations:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Drivers License within twelve (12) months of hire
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
2-4 years of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
Certificates Licenses Registrations:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Drivers License within twelve (12) months of hire
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
- Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
- Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
- Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
- Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
- Work in adverse environmental conditions which may include but not be limited to rain snow heat and hail
- Ability to walk for long periods on even and uneven ground
- Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
