CBC Quebec is looking for a full-time Assignment Editor (Regional) for English services based in our newsroom in Montreal.

You will assign and coordinate the work of our journalists assigned to local coverage in Quebec for all formats: video audio and text on digital and broadcast platforms live and on demand.

As part of our editorial leadership team you will determine story angles to pursue and develop original content ideas and pitches based on the needs of the audience seven days a week.

Your role includes consulting planning assigning and coordinating newsgathering resources -- including journalists who are part of CBCs local service expansion.

This position requires someone with initiative solid editorial judgment leadership skills and a great sense of video written and audio storytelling. Your curiosity and creativity encourages experimentation to engage with audiences shifting habits.

We are looking for someone with a good contact network who strives to broaden the range of perspectives experiences and points of view reflected in our stories especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media.

You are approachable and supportive and demonstrate your commitment to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture. You are also skilled at navigating conflict and change as well as breaking down silos.

You can handle the demands of multiple priorities and deadlines and know how to get the best out of your colleagues including in breaking news situations. You can make quick decisions when required but youre also a creative thinker.

In this role you will have an uncompromising attention to detail and accuracy and ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair balanced accurate thoughtful and immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

For reference purposes this position includes working Tuesday to Saturday and would involve working a combination of shifts during the day and evening. This is subject to change.

Your responsibilities include the following:

  • Assign video audio and text to journalists based on audience needs.

  • Follow events as they unfold adjusting assignments as needed to cover breaking news.

  • Write copy edit and vet content for all platforms as required ensuring all content complies with CBCs journalistic standards and practices.

  • Foster a healthy pitch culture and help journalists develop their ideas.

  • Provide regular feedback and celebrate great work.

  • Lead daily assignment and planning meetings.

  • Update the newsroom outlook and other communication tools.

  • Plan and chase medium- and long-term assignments and create a bank of story ideas.

  • Update and plan our digital lineups including for our website video carousel and our FAST channel on connected TVs.

  • Keep up with local regional national and international news through various sources.

  • Develop and maintain a network of contacts to source original stories stay on top of story developments.

  • Provide additional research documentation and interviews to support assignments.

  • Follow-up on pitches to the newsroom to assess coverage potential and seek information.

  • Coordinate with the national assignment editor on stories of interest.

  • Coordinate the work of research journalists and interns as needed.

  • Arrange schedules of editorial and technical resources to meet coverage needs.

  • Order corrections hold stories or request changes in collaboration with the Executive Producer and Managing Editor as required.

  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent

  • Five (5) years journalism experience or equivalent

  • Extensive general knowledge including current events and issues in Quebec.

  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Quebec and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

  • In-depth knowledge of newsroom logistics production techniques and storytelling formats for video audio mobile/web.

  • Ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts.

  • Strong knowledge of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Proven ability to foster a vibrant inclusive and respectful team culture.

  • Experience navigating and leading others through periods of significant change.

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of digital platforms ability to keep up with best practices and technological tools/innovations to serve digital audiences.

  • Knowledge of production applications including Dalet iNEWS Avid 9CMS.

  • Ability to plan organize and coordinate on deadline and stay calm under pressure.

  • Superior organizational skills.

  • Fluent in English and strong working knowledge of French.
