Job Duties
The Yvonne B. Miller High School at the Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center seeks a Culinary Arts Teacher to deliver standards-aligned research-based instruction in a safe structured and culturally responsive classroom.
Responsibilities include planning and teaching competency-based curriculum supervising students managing behavior and maintaining accurate instructional and administrative records in compliance with DJJ and DHRM policies.
The teacher will create an inclusive learning environment that affirms student diversity and uses instructional materials and communication strategies reflecting varied cultural linguistic and developmental needs.
The role requires:
- Ongoing monitoring of student progress
- Setting measurable goals
- Documenting growth and entering grades weekly in the Student Information System.
- Participation in Treatment Team Meetings and timely submission of required documentation are essential.
- Professional expectations include demonstrating strong content knowledge applying research-based instructional practices understanding student developmental needs and maintaining regular reliable attendance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of content curriculum methods materials and equipment to successfully perform the work.
- Ability to supervise students and youth facilitate appropriate classroom management and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge of DJJ and DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM established physical demands. - Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Additional Considerations
- Education: Bachelors degree or higher with a concentration in Family and Consumer Science.
- Experience: Experience as a Family and Consumer Science teacher in a secondary setting; Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred.
- Licensure: Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement(s) in Family and Consumer Science.
