Job Summary

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position (9-month annual support) at the assistant professor level with a specialization in coastal marine ecology in the Department of Marine Biology based at the UAF main campus (Troth Yeddha campus) in Fairbanks Alaska. Applications are encouraged from individuals with strong scientific and academic backgrounds who are committed to contributing to academic and research excellence at UAF. Successful candidates will complement the expertise of existing faculty and contribute to high quality teaching research and service. UAF is a federally recognized Alaska Native-serving institution that supports bridging Indigenous and Western sciences.

Strong candidates for this position will be expected to lead vigorous Alaska-based research programs that involve the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Candidates will also be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of their expertise. We particularly encourage submissions from individuals with expertise in coastal marine ecology with a focus on either macroalgae and/or benthic invertebrates in intertidal or shallow subtidal waters. Applicants are expected to make use of our coastal lab the Kasitsna Bay Lab in Kachemak Bay AK for their research and teaching. Ideally applicants are certified scientific divers with an interest in contributing to our Scientific Diving Program through teaching and leadership roles within the program. The home campus for this position will be the Troth Yeddha campus in Fairbanks AK.

The College offers a B.S. in Fisheries and Ocean Sciences a B.A. in Fisheries Minors in Marine Science and Fisheries Master of Marine Policy Master of Marine Studies and Blue MBA degree programs as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography Marine Biology and Fisheries. Coastal facilities include the NOAA-UAF Kasitsna Bay Laboratory near Homer in Kachemak Bay the Seward Marine Center in Resurrection Bay and the Lena Point Fisheries Facility co-located with the NOAA Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute in Juneau. CFOS operates the National Science Foundations 261-foot Global Class ice-capable research vessel Sikuliaq. The College has over 150 faculty researchers and staff more than 100 graduate students and a growing undergraduate degree program in fisheries and ocean sciences. The Department of Marine Biology maintains a strong program that includes eight tenured or tenure-track faculty and two research faculty members.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in marine biology biology ecology or a closely related field. Postdoctoral research experience successful proposal funding and a peer-reviewed publication record are preferred. The ideal candidate has a strong scientific diving record. Applicants must be proficient in English have experience teaching at the university level and in mentoring students and have a strong research and publication record. A valid drivers license and a clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria are required.

Position Details:

The position will be based on the Troth Yedda campus in Fairbanks Alaska. This is a full-time FLSA exempt tripartite tenure-track faculty position complete with both a competitive salary (starting pay is DOE) andfull employee benefits package.
