The UW Pediatrics Division of Nephrology has an exciting opportunity for a Managing Editor (Editor-Research Publications 2 (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv)) to join their team: This position may be performed 100% remotely; on campus workspace is also available if preferred.
POSITION PURPOSE
The position provides managing editor support to Dr. Joseph Flynn the Seattle-based Editor-in-Chief of the journal Pediatric Nephrology. Pediatric Nephrology publishes original clinical research related to acute and chronic diseases that affect kidney function blood pressure and fluid and electrolyte disorders in children. Studies may involve medical surgical nutritional physiologic biochemical genetic pathologic or immunologic aspects of disease imaging techniques or consequences of acute or chronic kidney disease.
This position provides advanced editorial production and publication management for a peerreviewed scientific journal. This role independently manages manuscript workflows supports editorial decision-making performs substantive editing and copyediting coordinates print and online production and creates editorial and promotional content. Work is performed with a high degree of autonomy in collaboration with Editors-in-Chief and the publisher.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Editorial Workflow Peer Review & Research Integrity
Independently manage manuscript processing in the online system Editorial Manager including submission intake editor assignment peerreview coordination revision tracking and final decision processing.
Apply editorial and ethical standards to ensure compliance with journal and publisher policies including conflictofinterest management.
Review similarity screening using the Editorial Manager Turnitin application interpret results and consult with EditorsinChief on appropriate actions. As necessary run Turnitin application on revisions.
Draft and submit decision letters and supporting materials.
Substantive Editing Copyediting and Quality Control
Perform advanced editing and detailed copyediting for clarity grammar scientific style consistency and journal formatting standards.
Ensure manuscripts meet requirements for article type abstracts references tables figures graphical abstracts nomenclature and ethics statements.
Provide enhanced language editing for authors whose first language is not English while preserving scientific meaning.
Review and approve final proofs with the publisher to ensure publication readiness.
Production Coordination and Issue Management
Lead monthly print issue planning (issue building) including schedules draft article lists and final disposition lists for the publisher.
Analyze article mix and publication timing to determine issue composition and article categorization.
Coordinate with EditorsinChief to finalize issue content and select monthly freetoaccess articles.
Work with Publisher staff to finalize issue content including review of journal covers front matter and other issue materials for accuracy and resolve discrepancies with production staff.
Coordinate annual selection and permissions for journal cover images.
Writing Editorial Content and Author Communications
Write and edit editorial content such as newsletter articles conference materials author invitations editorial correspondence and author guides.
Draft clear professional communications for authors reviewers editors the publisher and the sponsoring association.
Prepare and submit final accepted manuscripts and production notes to the publisher.
Research Metrics Reporting and Scholarly Outreach
Manage the journals social media presence (Twitter/X Facebook and BlueSky) including writing article posts and preparing visual assets.
Maintain databases of author social media handles and manage Bitly links for freetoaccess articles.
Compile and analyze editorial publication and engagement metrics (e.g. acceptance rates turnaround times social media analytics).
Prepare data summaries reports and presentations for EditorsinChief the publisher and the sponsoring association.
Use publisher tools to gather citation access Altmetric and Open Access data to support outreach and issue planning.
Additional responsibilities
Meet as needed with Editors-in-chief counterpart managing editor in London office and Publisher; such meetings may need to be scheduled at odd hours to accommodate time zone differences.
Attend biennial journal strategic planning meetings with journal Publisher and IPNA leadership typically held in Germany or another European location.
