TITLE: Teacher - Gear Up Coach

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: 184-Day Contract. This position is full-time with additional summer work required.

SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Exempt - Certified

GENERAL STATEMENT of RESPONSIBILITIES:

The purpose of GEAR UP is to significantly increase the number of students from low-income communities who graduate from high school prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. This position is designed to focus on promoting opportunities for all students in the education pipeline between the ninth-grade year and the first year of post-secondary education.

This is a professional student-support position responsible for managing the delivery and implementation of core interventions and services for students and their families as outlined in the districts Future Ready initiatives. The successful candidate communicates effectively and fosters positive relationships with students colleagues families and community partners to motivate action and create student success. The candidate should have knowledge of federal financial aid requirements college application and scholarship requirements as well as understanding how to read and analyze GPA and transcripts and understand ABOR requirements. Candidate must be willing to work night weekend events and become part of the BUHSD Gear Up Team. Responsibilities also will include maintaining high level of confidentiality and standard professionalism while providing a safe environment that promotes learning and personal growth to the students of the district.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Typically works an additional 20 days (10 days prior and 10 days after) beyond the 9-month certified contract.
  • Assists students in evaluating their strengths and weaknesses using pertinent data to set educational and post-secondary goals.
  • Remains readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth self-understanding and maturity.
  • Meet with individuals and groups about Personal Education and Career Action Plans.
  • Implement guidance/Gear Up curriculum to deliver targeted services for student populations.
  • Effectively communicate with site administration certified staff classified staff parent/guardians students and outside partners.
  • Monitor student progress through high school and support targeted interventions with administrators teachers and parents.
  • Organize and schedule programs and events that will further academic and career growth of students.
  • Organize and/or administer various state and district testing programs for students (ex: state-mandated tests Advanced Placement Exams dual enrollment qualifying exams etc.).
  • Stays current with post-secondary scholarship opportunities as well as other financial aid opportunities such as the FAFSA.
  • Work with outside liaisons in support of students well-being and post-secondary planning (ex: College Representatives Military Recruiters Trade School representatives etc.)
  • Works with the Gear Up Team to implement Senior Family meetings FAFSA application and celebration events scholarship and application workshops next steps workshops Decision Day events along with many other events and activities.
  • Support district site and department goals projects and initiatives.
  • Works in conjunction with the Future Ready Teachers to provide resources and curriculum to the students.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom school grounds hallways restrooms field trips etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Is available to students and parents for guidance education-related purposes or activities outside the instructional day as assigned by the administration. Evening and weekend events are common and are required. Several days are also required in the summer to help students complete their enrollment to the post-secondary opportunities.
  • Attends site district in-services etc. to maintain proficient technical skills and continued professional growth.
  • Participates in assisting other colleagues.
  • Complies with all rules regulations and policies of the Governing Board that related to the duties as prescribed.
  • Agrees that during the period of the contract s/he will perform management duties or other duties as assigned by the administration or Governing Board.
  • Eligible for district approved Prop 301 monies at a maximum 1.0 FTE.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience as a Gear Up Coach.
  • Valid Arizona certificate for the position and subject areas assigned
    • Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement
    • School Counseling PreK-12 preferred.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC)
  • Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education/Counseling or a related field from an accredited college/university preferred or an equivalent combination of academic preparation and expertise from which comparable knowledge skills and abilities have been achieved may be acceptable.
  • An understanding of the factors that impact student success
  • Experience in high school counseling preferred

OCCUPATIONAL CONDITION:

Low risk - Work is routinely performed in indoor environments including exposure to noise and being on your feet for extended periods of time. May be required to travel outdoors in inclement conditions to go from building to building for meetings or classes. The employee may be required to move from room to room through corridors heavily congested with people.

The applicant for this position is required to:

    • Stooping crouching reaching standing walking and repetitive motions.

    • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Hearing ability to monitor presence and activity of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required.

The evaluation is done by the Site Principal/Assistant Principal(s).

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The Gear Up Coach reports directly to the Site Principal and the Gear Up Director.
