Job Summary

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our team. You will contribute to making the heavy vehicle industry safer resulting in fewer road deaths and injuries. You will do this by working with local councils to help them determine the capabilities of their bridges and culverts leading to opportunities for modern safer and more productive vehicles to access more of the road network. Your work will also underpin a national automated access system that will enable heavy vehicle operators determine the most efficient way to reach their destination within existing access constraints.

You will undertake reviews of bridge assessments and bridge data collection performed by contracted parties and help develop guidance and training for local road managers to make safer and more effective access decisions. This role will also be crucial in developing guidance to harmonise heavy vehicle access assessment practice. You will have excellent professional support working under the guidance of the NHVRs Chief Structural Engineer.

Key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Provide governance over the asset assessment program managed by the NHVR through leading and conducting specialist reviews of supplier assessments of bridges and culverts.
  • Prepare methodologies policies and guidelines as appropriate to improve the consistency of heavy vehicle access assessments related to bridges and culverts.
  • Provide technical structural engineering advice to assist the development and implementation of a sustainable assessment framework for asset capability in relation to heavy vehicle access.
  • Contribute to improvements in bridge assessment and reporting processes that reflect actual capability of structures to carry heavy vehicle loads.
  • Work with local councils to help them determine the capabilities of their bridges and culverts leading to safer and more sustainable access decisions.
  • Provide specialist advice for the development of training and guidance to support local authority road managers access structural assessment modules that are part of a National Automated Access System.

This role is a fixed-term engagement for 12 months (with potential for extension) working across a Federally funded project to help local governments determine the capability of their assets. Candidates seeking a part-time role will also be considered.

To be successful in this role you will hold a relevant degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in Civil Engineering specifically bridge assessment and design.

Your toolkit for success:

  • A bachelors degree in civil engineering Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status as well as Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) and Registered Professional Engineer Victoria (RPEV) in Civil or Structural or the ability to obtain these latter two qualifications within six months of commencement.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing services projects and tasks to establish a course of action for self and others to achieve specific objectives and deliver expected outcomes.
  • Demonstrated specialist knowledge of and experience in the interpretation and application of engineering bridge and culvert assessments bridge design heavy vehicle access assessment frameworks standards and relevant legislation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build rapport and develop strong stakeholder relationships across multiple sources taking end-to-end responsibility for a body of work.
  • Proven ability in undertaking bridge assessment and/or bridge design of a wide variety of structures as well as using specialist software including Space Gass.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).
