GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Floating Bus Driver is responsible for the safe transporting of special education students of the SJCISD. Other duties involve managing the operation of the bus to ensure a safe and hazard free environment for all students. This position does not have a set route; rather will float different routes as needed. When no routes are available follow Other Duties listed below.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Required: High school diploma or equivalent CPR/AED first aid training and other training as required (will be provided if needed).
- Commercial Drivers License appropriate for pupil transportation is necessary.
- Must pass a criminal record check and drug and alcohol testing.
- Excellent driving record.
- Ability to meet Department of Transportationphysical examination requirements.
- Must have prior work experience with children.
- Responsibility of employee to obtain and maintain all training(s) certificate(s) approval(s) etc. and provide documentationto the business office before expiration date of said document(s).
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
- Required to have a physical presence at the designated job site each scheduled work day.
- Must have regular and reliable job attendance performance and the physical ability to do the job.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To meet the requirements and follow the rules and regulations as established by the Michigan Department of Education and the SJCISD .
- To obey all laws governing the operation of a vehicle and/or a school bus.
- Drive a school bus according to a designated route and schedule. Participate in determining route and time changes when necessary.
- Operate a bus in various traffic weather and road conditions with the safety of students as the priority.
- Supervise students while driving maintain a safe and orderly atmosphere on the bus.
- Communicate with the Pathfinder building principal regarding student behavior or medical and safety issues.
- Maintain the bus in a clean and orderly condition sweep and empty trash.
- Refuel the bus when necessary as determined by the ISD Administration.
- Responsible for the bus its equipment its passengers and any aides assigned to his/her bus.
- Must complete daily pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and must immediately report needed repairs.
- Must follow the cell phone policy.
- Certified in CPR/AED first aid training and other training as required (will be provided if needed).
- To be at assigned work site at stated starting times ready to perform assigned duties.
- To appropriatelysecure wheelchairs with safety equipment.
- To keep all student parent and staff information confidential.
- To have a positive attitude in working with students parents community members and other staff members.
- To prepare and maintain route sheets.
- To assist Adminstration in mapping bus routes and planning schedules when needed.
- To prepare reports and keep all required records.
- To prepare Accident Report after any accident involving the bus and/or school bus passengers.
- Will be assigned weekend and mandatory time when needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the St. Joseph County ISD Administrators.
OTHER DUTIES:
1. Fluid Maintenance: monitor and refill antifreeze and windshield washer fluid. (stock located in the Barn)
2. Vehicle Readiness: perform full pre-trip inspection and start all spare/sub buses every 1-2 weeks and let them idle to maintain battery health.
3. Cleaning: maintain the interior and exterior cleanliness of all spare buses.
4. Island Maintenance: regularly check and replace the washer solvent in the containers.
5. Route Audits: ride along on routes to verify turn-by-turn accuracy. Notify Transportation Coordinator (TC) of any necessary updates to directions (e.g. left/right turns) or timing.
6. Logistics Support: coordinate with TC and Diesel Technician regarding bus drop-offs in Nottawa.
7. General Support: when tasks are complete assist with:
a. Washing dirty buses
b. Refueling vehicles
c. Installing harness straps or booster seats for trip buses
8. May also float routes as a Bus Aide as assigned

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: minimum 176 days. Salary and conditions of employment are determined by the Board of Education.
