The Nags Head Woods Preserve Visitor Outreach and Communication Intern performs and participates in preserve operations maintenance and management.
The Visitor Outreach and Communication Intern supports and enhances visitor services at the Nags Head Woods Preserve. This position is a summer internship that will work on educational graphic content and visitor services in Nags Head Woods Preserve (Preserve) owned by The Nature Conservancy in northeastern North Carolina. Key responsibilities include improving the overall visitor experience updating Pavilion exhibits and developing outreach materials and providing educational guided hikes.
The intern helps maintain areas of the preserve used by the public and contributes to the creation of interpretive educational materials and exhibits. They also assist with stewardship projects such as invasive plant management and native plant restoration.
Additional duties include maintaining facilities tools and equipment as well as opening and closing the preserve buildings.
Key activities may include:
Visitor services outreach and education (70%):
Greet visitors engage in visitor conversation and answer visitor questions.
Photography and video of nature sights on the Preserve; assist staff in promoting the Preserve on social media.
Staffing and supervision of visitor use of our improved Pavilion space providing interpretive education using a 3D map of the preserve and 75 touchscreen display.
Develop and improve Pavilion exhibits primarily creating visual content about the preserve or a virtual hike of the woods and other NC TNC work fish passage/floodplain wetland and oyster reef restoration.
Assist with leading weekly hikes and open house events for visitors in Nags Head Woods Preserve as well as educational programming for summer camp programs.
Preserve Stewardship Support (10%):
Organize and clean kiosk lobby and other visitor areas to appropriately represent The Nature Conservancy.
Assist with preserve stewardship projects including invasive plant management and native plant restoration.
Ensure hiking trails are passable and clean; other physical outdoor tasks as directed.
General Office Support (20%):
Create and maintain facility and stewardship management electronic records.
Scan and upload documents as digital files.
Perform additional administrative tasks as directed including mailings and updating documents.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
This is an hourly summer position (35 hours/week) for a 10-week term. Responsibilities of this role include:
May interact with visitors.
Works under close or infrequent supervision.
May work in variable weather conditions in isolated settings and under minor physically demanding circumstances.
Requiring minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience
Experience familiarity with camera video and graphic design software like Canva.
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid CPR herbicide or pesticide application).
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to obtain a drivers license and maintain a good driving record.
Prior work and/or volunteer experience with the public.
Clear communication skills via written spoken and graphical means in English.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both an independent and team environment.
Familiarity with Canva video equipment and social media graphic design
Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word Excel Canva Web browsers).
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $15.50 $17.00 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidates actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors including for example the candidates location qualifications specific skills and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
