In this pivotal role you will take custody of exhibits submitted during court proceedingsserving as the guardian of their integrity from intake to final disposition. Youll maintain responsibility and control over evidence ensuring every item is documented accurately stored securely tracked meticulously and handled in full compliance with Florida Statutes Best Practices and the Rules of General Practice and Judicial Administration.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Assists Court Services Coordinator and management team with quality control overall departmental efficiency training and procedural development as needed
  • Ensures compliance with evidence procedures and guidelines; ensures proper chain of custody in compliance with Florida state laws and best practices
  • Safeguards manages and tracks all evidentiary items from intake to storage or disposal ensuring meticulous chain of custody and accurate record-keeping.
  • Accepts and reviews all exhibits; verifies case information on Exhibit list for accuracy; sets and manages appointments to view or intake/transfer exhibits
  • Receives identifies secures records and releases various goods and items; maintains strict confidentiality; ensures that all evidence is properly packaged stored and labeled; inputs all information into computerized tracking system; transports evidence
  • Conducts extensive research on cases to determine eligibility for destruction; inventories vault contents; prepares and/ or e-files court orders and notices for evidence destruction including filing notices related to the disposal and status of exhibits.
  • Testifies in court or depositions
  • Handles email inquiries from the public
  • Assists with department testing and monthly reporting
  • Assists with training peers on work related processes/newly implemented procedures
  • Maintains established organizational/departmental productivity standards
  • Complies with all personnel policies and procedures
  • Ability to safely transport lift and maneuver small to large as well as heavy/bulkyexhibits between storage locations.
  • Safely receive verify and secure firearms/weapons ensuring they are unloaded and properly packaged
  • Handles hazardous materials including blood-borne pathogens or chemical substances

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma (or GED) supplemented by five (5) years of recent and relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to accurately apply acute attention to detail in maintenance of detailed data preferably in an automated systems environment or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. Some vocational or college courses preferred. Once qualified deputization may be required to perform the assigned functions.

Tasks may involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing bending stooping kneeling and crouching and that generally involves lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Prefers some previous work experience in handling evidence and/or confidential records and highly sensitive materials.

*This is a mandatory testing position; successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen & physical examination (if applicable) is required prior to employment.
