Role Overview

A leading engineering organisation operating within the power utilities sector is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer / Senior Technologist (HV) to take full technical ownership of high-voltage substation projects across utility-scale infrastructure.

This is a senior KPI-driven role intended for professionals with extensive experience in HV substation design engineering delivery and utility compliance. The successful candidate will lead substation planning and design activities while providing technical oversight across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities & Performance Indicators

The role will be measured against the following role-critical KPIs:

• End-to-end planning and design of HV substations (132kV 765kV)

• Delivery of accurate compliant substation layouts drawings and full design packages

• Selection specification and technical evaluation of primary plant equipment

• Preparation of electrical calculations studies and supporting technical documentation

• Compliance with local international and client engineering standards

• On-time delivery of multiple concurrent substation projects

• Technical leadership mentoring and guidance of junior engineers and designers

• Review of contractor designs and resolution of technical queries

• Engineering support during construction FAT SAT commissioning and final handover

Minimum Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification criteria:

• BSc Eng / BEng (Electrical) with a minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience
  OR

• BTech (Electrical) with a minimum of 10 years post-qualification engineering experience

Additional mandatory requirements:

• Professional registration with ECSA (Engineer or Engineering Technologist)

• 710 years experience in HV transmission and distribution projects

• Proven experience in power utility substation projects

• Eskom transmission and/or distribution experience is essential

• Strong working knowledge of Bentley MicroStation

• Valid South African drivers licence

• Own reliable transport
