Job Summary

Job Goal: To help each student expand his/her competence in mathematical skills and develop a deeper understanding of the structure of mathematics; to motivate each student to apply mathematical understanding and skills in the solution of practical problems; to encourage students to develop their special talents in the field of mathematics.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum of a B.S. Degree in elementary education or secondary education - mathematics.
  2. Gifted & Talented certification or endorsement preferred.
  3. Alabama State Department of Education Teaching certification in the area of instructional responsibility required.
  4. At least three years of successful teaching experience required.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Appropriate Supervisor and Principal

Background Check Required: (Ala. Code 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks may not be more than ten (10) years old.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  1. Deep mathematical knowledge and expertise in teaching upper elementary and early middle school mathematics.
  2. Confident in mathematical knowledge and teaching abilities in order to accept the divergent thinking abilities of advanced students.
  3. Knowledge of state core curriculum content standards and district educational goals and objectives of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  4. Knowledge of student academic progress toward stated objectives of instruction.
  5. Knowledge of schools program of studies related to mission goals and organization.
  6. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  7. Ability to develop and implement lesson plans based on district and state courses of study in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students parents colleagues and community members.
  9. Ability to use and manage technology including but not limited to e-mail internet Microsoft Office Programs etc.
  10. Knowledge and understanding of the school system rules administrative procedures local board policy and state and federal rules and regulations.
  11. Possesses the physical and emotional ability to fulfill the contract period.

Essential Functions:

  1. Teaches accelerated and enriched mathematics to elementary students.
  2. Implements opportunities and expectations for students to learn at an accelerated pace to learn in depth and to learn integrated themes and connections between disciplines.
  3. Adapts the content where appropriate condenses the concepts where applicable alters the pace of content acquisition and allows for open ended multiple solutions to problems.
  4. Participates in building an instructional framework for advanced mathematics.
  5. Provides training for K-5 teachers in the areas of mathematics and creative and critical thinking strategies.
  6. Collaborates with and supports K-5 teachers in working with students having an advanced knowledge of mathematics.
  7. Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals objectives and student outcomes.
  8. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  9. Plans class activities and lesson presentations that are age-appropriate for the class and meet the individual needs interests and ability levels of all students.
  10. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  11. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
  12. Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities as required or assigned.
  13. Communicates to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) the instructional expectations student progress or lack of progress.
  14. Demonstrates a positive and technically competent set of parent/ community relations skills including oral communication written communications and listening skills in- group and one-on- one situations as necessary
  15. Ensures confidentiality of all students records grades performance and all other related matters.
  16. Participates in school-level planning faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups.
  17. Assumes other responsibilities and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
  18. Establishes and maintains a high level of rapport with other teachers team leaders district-level coordinators and/or program directors and instructional support and service employees of the school district.
  19. Fulfills professional responsibilities beyond those exhibited in the classroom to include participation in school co-curricular programs school and district program improvement efforts participation in community and parent groups and abides by and promotes high ethical standards.
  20. Models appropriate personal characteristics and work habits that are consistent with personal development goals established for students.
  21. Performs other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification as may be assigned.
  • This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011 no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.

Expected Employment: 187 days (full year)

Evaluation: According to established Board policies and administrative procedures and guidelines

Salary Range: According to Madison City Schools Salary Schedule (Salary based on employment for complete year)
