This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis.

Job Description:

The Student Assistant Character Performer will portray assigned costume characters while engaging guests through expressive non verbal communication character appropriate gestures and family friendly interactions. Responsibilities include posing for photos performing simple freestyle dancing when appropriate and adhering to all performance guidelines including maintaining character integrity refraining from speaking and upholding UF and Lastinger Center standards. The position is time-limited and soft-funded.

Job Duties:

  • Portray assigned costume characters including Clifford the Big Red Dog and Brooks the Bobcat
  • Interact with guests using non-verbal communications gestures and character appropriate movements
  • Pose for photos with event guests families and event staff
  • Perform simple family-friendly freestyle dancing when appropriate
  • Follow all costume performance guidelines including:
    • No speaking while in costume
    • No photos with other characters
    • No behavior inconsistent with UF or Lastinger Center standards
  • Remain aware of safety considerations and costume limitations such as restricted vision and movement
  • Assist with event set up and tear down as requested
  • Maintain costume integrity by transporting handling and wearing costumes with care
  • Support other character actors as their handler by transporting them to and from their primary location

Work Schedule:

  • Schedule varies based on planned events (projected 30 events per year)
  • Events may occur during business hours evenings and weekends
  • Travel within Florida including occasional overnight trips is required and will be funded by the UF Lastinger Center
Expected Salary:

$20 per hour

Required Qualifications:

This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis.

Preferred:
  • Ability to work in hot confining heavy costume with limited range of vision covering your head
  • Height and build requirements due to costume dimensions:
    • Clifford: 56 to 510 between 120-150 lbs
    • Brooks the Bobcat: 57 to 61 and average build
  • Willingness to work at different locations in Florida including outdoor locations
  • Ability to remain in costume for extended periods with breaks provided
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort engaging with children and families
