The Senior Project Engineer on the Mega and M&A Engineering team will be responsible for design and engineering of utility scale solar PV and energy storage projects in development and construction phases. Responsibilities include lead and support engineering activities across the full project lifecycle including design development and peer reviews energy and performance modeling equipment selection and specifications and preparation of engineering calculations. Provide technical inputs to support Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) pricing estimates RFP responses permitting applications design drafting and technical due diligence for M&A project evaluations. Responsibilities also include engineering management development and review of contract documents participation in technical negotiations preparation of procurement specifications punch list development and delivery of ongoing technical support throughout project execution.

Designs will be developed optimized analyzed and reviewed using industry-standard tools including PVsyst AutoCAD Civil 3D GIS MS Office and SharePoint. This role will provide technical leadership across multiple projects by defining design-phase roadmaps establishing development engineering standards and processes and training and mentoring junior engineers. The successful candidate will manage complex multi-project priorities communicate progress to the Senior Manager of Mega and M&A Engineering and operate effectively with distributed and remote teams. A strong background in the development execution analysis and design of utility-scale transmission-interconnected PV and battery energy storage systems is required along with a demonstrated ability and commitment to coaching and developing engineering talent. Experience with additional renewable technologies such as wind green hydrogen or hydroelectric systems is a plus. Excellent communication planning and task-management skills combined with broad technical expertise are essential for success in this role.

The position is in Louisville CO / Houston TX / Salt Lake City UT / or New York NY and may include up to 25% travel to project locations and partner offices including international travel.

Key Responsibilities

Project Development

M&A

• Perform full technical due diligence and risk assessment for the M&A projects
• Full project design evaluation to identify red flags and fatal flows
• Redesign and update layouts energy production estimates EPC cost estimates and equipment selections
• Coordinate with M&A developer to complete necessary RFP response documentation
• Design for select projects up to 30% electrical civil structural and mechanical

Project Execution

Mega

• Develop scopes of work and technical contract exhibits.
• Seek and evaluate proposals for engineering services.
• Manage engineering consultants and EPC contractors to develop project construction drawings and support materials.
• Perform technical project due diligence and project engineering design reviews.
• Coordinate feedback from internal stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) on design reviews.
• Value engineer PV and BESS system designs to maximize reliability and reduce overall project cost.
• Establish/review technical specifications of owner furnished equipment in coordination with Procurement and Sourcing.
• Technical support during construction including:
• Respond to contractor requests for information (RFIs).
• Perform quality assurance (QA)/ quality control (QC) checks in the field.
• Develop punchlists.
• Support commissioning activities with internal Technology/Commissioning teams and external stakeholders.
• Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance.
• Support internal Owners Engineering team through financing activities.
• Support Operations/Asset Management teams to resolve technical issues at operating sites.
• Assist Development and Project Management teams with budget development and key financial inputs.
• Develop and implement technical solutions to region/market specific requirements in coordination with Director of Engineering Mega Projects.

Growth and Leadership

• Contribute to process improvement initiatives for the development and execution of safe quality and high-performance projects.
• Develop inter-engineering processes for sharing information and best practices among the team
• Manage relationships with 3rd party engineering consultants and firms utilized by the team
• Mentor and train the team on changing trends in technology best practices and safety
• Participate in AES Clean Energys growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activities

Skills and Qualifications

Primary Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field
• 5 years of professional experience in solar PV system design development construction and analysis preferred
• Proficiency in PV system design including 1-line and 3-line diagram conventions NEC design requirements overcurrent protection sizing utility disconnecting means requirements equipment selection grounding methodologies and short circuit current analysis
• Experience with medium voltage collector system design
• Effective leadership communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Proficient with MS Office Suite

Plus Qualifications

• Graduate degree in Engineering
• PE license
• PMP Certification
• NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification
• 2-5 years of experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems design and modeling
• Experience with MATLAB ETAP SKM and other advanced modeling tools
• Substation/HV design experience
• NFPA 70E OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certification

The expected salary for this position at commencement of employment is between $113000 and $141525/Annual; however base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors including market location job-related knowledge skills and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus in addition to a full range of medical dental vision life financial and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits such as vacation sick time and parental leave) dependent on the position offered.
