Junior Sailing Race Team Manager
REPORTS TO :
Program Director and General Manager in collaboration with the Non-Calm Advisory Committee
SUPERVISES :
Race Team Coaches and Race Team Sailors
POSITION OVERVIEW :
The Jr. Sailing Race Team Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Junior Sailing Race Team Program. This role includes program planning staff supervision and mentoring race team curriculum development regatta logistics equipment management and direct coaching of both single handed and double handed sailors. The Jr. Sailing Race Team Manager works closely with the Junior Sailing Program Director to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality racing programs across all seasons.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree (4-year college graduate)
US Sailing Level 1 Coach Certification
First Aid/CPR Certification
Advanced coaching experience
Prior experience working with junior sailors
Extensive experience coaching C420s
Elite performance experience as a former C420 sailor
Strong leadership organizational and communication skills
Demonstrated passion for sailing racing physical fitness and youth development
CORE COMPETENCIES & EXPECTATIONS:
Ability to manage and supervise 20 staff members during the summer and 8 coaches during the Fall Winter and Spring
Ability to design implement and evaluate curriculum for the Race Teams
High-level coaching proficiency across Sabots CFJs and C420s with particular expertise in advanced junior racing (single-handed and double-handed platforms)
Strong communication skills with parents sailors staff and advisory committees
Professional approachable ability to connect to sailors and team-oriented demeanor
Ability and passion to film practices and regattas utilize drones and produce detailed written debriefs. Conduct seasonal one-on-one meetings for all race team sailors and parents to check in on the sailors goal skills and help guide sailors to become the best sailors in the country.
Commitment to mentoring and training junior and developing coaches. Meet with coaches prior to the start of each season to go over the class curriculum with the coach and create the road map for the season. Conduct mid season meeting with the coaches to ensure they are on track with the roadmap and give tips to improve.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Support Race Team Program planning take lead on hiring for all race team seasons and organization for Fall Winter Spring and Summer Programs
Ensure consistent delivery of program goals standards and policies across all racing teams by conducting seasonal meetings with race team sailors parents and coaches.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize Fall Winter Spring and Summer program registrations in coordination with the Sailing Director
Manage class lists emergency contacts medical forms liability waivers and program records
In charge of recruiting hiring and onboarding race team coaches for all seasonal programs
Oversee the Summer Race Team Program supervising up to 120 sailors and 20 coaches
Run weekly summer races in either the Turning Basin
Coordinate regatta logistics including trailers towing coaching assignments and accommodations for Sabot CFJ and C420 regattas
Maintain program equipment including radios marks dollies club CFJs and C420s; order replacement parts as needed
Assist committee volunteers with major events including Summer Trophy Night Family Fun Night Summer Program Parent Orientation and Kick-Off Dinner
Prepare and assist with Instructor and Junior Instructor orientations including leading race team-specific sessions
Coach practices clinics and regattas throughout Fall Winter Spring and Summer seasons
Attend Junior Board meetings and Parent Advisory Committee meetings
Document and track billing for all seasonal programs
Address disciplinary matters in accordance with the employee handbook and established policies
Travel to local Southern California regattas and national travel events as required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions
Ability to swim
Willingness to assist with all aspects of boat maintenance including:
Lifting and moving boats
Flipping boats onto racks
Pulling boats from the water
Righting capsized boats on the water
Ability to lift minimum of 50 pounds
