Job Summary

The Programme Coordinator and Lecturer is a pivotal role that combines academic leadership programme management and teaching excellence. The incumbent will be responsible for delivering high-quality innovative education developing and coordinating multiple programmes within their field and actively participating in academic governance structures as directed by the Head of Faculty and/or Chief Academic Officer.

This position requires the development and delivery of curricula that meet regulatory requirements align with industry standards and support the institutions commitment to academic excellence. The role involves overseeing the efficient delivery of programmes fostering continuous improvement and ensuring compliance with accreditation bodies and institutional policies.

The Programme Coordinator will also play a critical role in shaping the academic direction of their programmes maintaining compliance with regulatory bodies and ensuring that curricula remain dynamic innovative and aligned with professional standards. This position is instrumental in fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within the institution.


Main Purpose of the Job

The Programme Coordinator and Lecturer is central to the delivery and coordination of high-quality education within their designated field ensuring alignment with institutional goals regulatory standards and industry needs. This role encompasses academic leadership curriculum development and strategic programme management to foster excellence and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities include delivering engaging and impactful teaching designing innovative and responsive curricula and maintaining compliance with the requirements of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The incumbent will actively support students academic and professional growth while collaborating with Independent Contractors (ICs) to ensure consistent achievement of academic objectives.

By integrating academic leadership with operational efficiency the role contributes to the institutions vision of providing transformative education that prepares students for both academic and professional success.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Programme Coordination (20%) - (Diploma in Metropolitan and Traffic Policing the Postgraduate Diploma in Traffic Policing or as allocated by HOF/Chief Academic Officer)
i. Programme Design and Development
Lead the design development and review of programmes to ensure alignment with institutional strategy the Higher Education Qualifications
Framework (HEQF) and standards set by the Council on Higher Education (CHE).
Ensure programmes are industry-relevant and incorporate both theoretical and practical components.
ii. Programme Monitoring and Review
Conduct regular internal and external reviews to evaluate the quality relevance and effectiveness of programmes.
Implement improvements based on stakeholder feedback student outcomes and changes in industry or academic standards.
iii. Stakeholder Collaboration
Engage with internal stakeholders (faculty students and administration) and external stakeholders (industry professionals regulatory bodies and employers) to maintain programme relevance and quality.
Foster partnerships that enhance the value and recognition of the programmes.
iv. Student Recruitment and Selection
Oversee recruitment admission and selection processes ensuring compliance with institutional equity diversity and access policies.
Collaborate with relevant departments to develop strategies that attract high-quality applicants.
v. Programme Impact and Performance Evaluation
Regularly assess the programmes impact on student employability and career success driving continuous improvement initiatives.
Monitor programme performance through feedback from students staff and external stakeholders using data-driven insights for enhancement.
vi. Programme Delivery and Operational Management
Coordinate the delivery and management of programmes to ensure operational efficiency academic coherence and industry relevance.
Ensure the timely distribution of learning materials and support services to students.
Maintain accurate student records and compliance with institutional policies.


2. Teaching Learning Academic Support and Content Development (20%)
i. Course Material Development and Delivery
Develop and deliver engaging multimedia-rich course materials and assessments tailored for both in-person and distance learning environments.
Incorporate interactive tools and platforms to enhance student engagement and accessibility.
ii. Delivery of Lectures and Tutorials
Deliver high-quality lectures seminars and tutorials that blend theoretical knowledge with practical applications.
Employ diverse teaching methodologies to cater to varied learning preferences ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.
iii. Curriculum Design and Innovation
Lead the design and development of industry-relevant engaging course content aligned with programme objectives.
Regularly review and update materials to reflect advancements in the discipline changes in accreditation standards and evolving industry needs.
iv. Student Consultations and Support
Provide academic support through individual consultations and group sessions addressing academic challenges and promoting success.
Dedicate a minimum of 5 hours per week at the Writing Centre to assist students with writing research and critical thinking skills.
v. Academic Mentorship
Mentor students throughout their academic journey guiding coursework research projects and professional development.
Track and monitor student progress identifying those at risk and implementing timely interventions.
vi. Assessment Design and Feedback
Develop robust assessments including examinations assignments and projects that align with programme learning outcomes.
Provide constructive actionable feedback to support continuous student improvement and achievement of learning goals.
vii. Learning Experience Design
Design innovative learning experiences that seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
Ensure content and assessments promote critical thinking problem-solving and professional readiness.
viii. Continuous Improvement
Regularly evaluate teaching practices student outcomes and course effectiveness to identify areas for improvement.
Integrate feedback from students peers and industry stakeholders to enhance teaching and learning practices.

3. Regulatory Compliance (5%)
i. Accreditation Adherence
Ensure programmes meet the standards and requirements set by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and other relevant regulatory bodies.
Regularly review programme offerings to maintain alignment with accreditation frameworks and compliance obligations.
ii. Implementation of Regulatory Changes
Stay updated on changes in higher education regulations accreditation standards and policies.
Assist with the implementation of necessary adjustments to programme design teaching methodologies and operational practices to align with updated regulatory requirements.
iii. Reporting and Documentation
Prepare and submit accurate and comprehensive documentation reports and records to meet regulatory and institutional standards.
Collaborate with relevant departments to ensure timely submission of reports and other compliance-related documentation to regulatory bodies.
iv. Policy Alignment and Monitoring
Ensure institutional policies and practices align with the legislative requirements and best practices in South African higher education.
Monitor compliance across programmes and departments identifying and addressing any gaps in adherence to regulatory standards.
v. External Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as a liaison between the institution and regulatory bodies addressing queries and ensuring clear communication regarding compliance matters.
Build and maintain relationships with accreditation authorities and other key stakeholders to support institutional compliance efforts.
vi. Internal Training and Support
Provide training and support to academic and administrative staff on regulatory requirements as required ensuring a thorough understanding of compliance obligations.
Develop resources and tools to aid in maintaining compliance across the institution.

4. General Academic Administration (10%)
i. Academic Records Management
Maintain accurate and secure records of student grades attendance and programme activities.
Ensure all assessment records including marks and feedback are recorded accurately and in compliance with institutional policies and data protection standards.
ii. Registration and Graduation Processes
Facilitate student registration processes ensuring compliance with institutional timelines and policies.
Verify student eligibility for graduation in collaboration with administrative staff ensuring accuracy and adherence to institutional and regulatory requirements.
iii. Programme Logistics Coordination
Collaborate with administrative staff to manage logistical aspects of programme delivery including scheduling assessments and resource allocation.
Ensure seamless communication and coordination between academic and administrative teams to support efficient programme operations.
iv. Data Management and Reporting
Maintain secure accurate and up-to-date records of student performance and programme documentation ensuring compliance with institutional policies and legal requirements.
Generate detailed reports on student performance attendance and programme activities to support decision-making and quality assurance efforts.
v. Compliance and Documentation
Ensure all programme-related documentation aligns with institutional and regulatory standards.
Monitor and maintain records required for accreditation and quality assurance audits.
vi. Student Engagement Support
Assist with resolving student queries related to academic records registration and graduation processes.
Ensure students have access to accurate information and support for administrative requirements.

Assess and identify the professional development and training needs of academic staff particularly module leaders within assigned programmes.

9. Independent Contractors (IC)/Sessional Lecturer Management (10%)
i. Recruitment of Independent Contractors (ICs)/Sessional Lecturers
Lead the recruitment and selection process for qualified ICs and sessional lecturers to deliver programme modules.
Ensure all candidates meet the institutions academic standards and programme-specific requirements including relevant qualifications and experience.
ii. Onboarding and Training
Provide comprehensive onboarding for ICs/sessionals outlining institutional expectations policies and available resources.
Facilitate training sessions to align ICs with teaching standards curriculum objectives and best practices in distance learning.
iii. Performance Management and Monitoring
Monitor the performance of ICs/sessionals through regular evaluations feedback from students and quality assurance reviews.
Address performance concerns promptly providing constructive feedback and guidance to maintain high-quality instruction.
iv. Support and Communication
Act as a liaison between ICs/sessionals and the institution ensuring clear communication regarding academic policies programme objectives and institutional updates.

Oversee the management of IC/sessionals contracts ensuring all agreements comply with institutional policies and legal standards.

10. Examination and Assessment Management (5%)
i. Planning and Coordination
Plan manage and oversee all assessments and examinations for assigned programmes ensuring alignment with the academic calendar.
Coordinate the development scheduling and implementation of assessments collaborating with relevant departments to ensure smooth operations.
ii. Examination Integrity and Security
Ensure the integrity and security of the examination process from preparation to distribution and submission.
Implement measures to safeguard against breaches in assessment security and ensure compliance with institutional policies.

Requirements

Qualifications

A minimum of a Masters Degree in Traffic and Metropolitan Policing with a proven history that establishes the candidate as a subject matter expert in the field(s).

A PhD in the relevant field will be advantageous.


Experience

Minimum of 1-3 years experience in lecturing within higher education specifically in Traffic and Metropolitan Policing and Law Enforcement or related fields.

Membership with the International Police Association South African section will be an advantage where membership is possible.

Experience in distance learning will be an advantage

Proven experience in academic leadership and programme coordination.

Experience in curriculum development and alignment with CHE regulatory frameworks.
