The opportunity we have available

The Legal Practice Management team is seeking an APS6 level Legal Practice Administrator with strong administrative experience to assist the team to provide high-level support to the lawyers in the Division.

The Legal Practice Management team which consists of three Legal Practice Administrators and a Legal Practice Manager undertake the processes and procedures which allow effective administrative support for the lawyers in the division.

This role will provide you the opportunity to contribute to the interesting and important work undertaken by the Legal Practice Management team and will further enhance your administrative skills and knowledge of Commonwealth processes and develop your leadership skills in a team where everyone is valued and appreciated.

Out of this process we may decide to establish a merit pool for future vacancies.

What will you do

Operating under direction from the Legal Practice Manager your key responsibilities as a member of the Legal Practice Management team will include:

  • contributing to prudent financial management by co-ordinating procurement activities making recommendations on appropriate legal spend maintaining accurate decision records and reporting on legal services expenditure
  • providing administrative support to lawyers including renewing legal practice certificates and coordinating continuing professional development opportunities and legal subscriptions
  • maintaining legal practice policies guidance notes templates and intranet content
  • supporting relationship management with legal firms professional bodies and service providers
  • supervising more junior legal practice administrators and being responsible for the quality of output for own work and the broader team by conducting regular quality assurance of work area processes
  • using sound judgement to triage prioritise delegate and progress Legal Practice Management tasks and resolve escalated issues under limited direction
  • initiating and driving business improvement processes
  • providing other high level administrative and operational tasks as required to the Legal Practice Management team and the lawyers in the division.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure Transport Regional Development Communications Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

  • Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
  • Health Assessment: The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the departments preferred medical provider.
  • Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at the AGSVA Baseline Clearance Level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia or have a checkable background for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.
  • Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
  • Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.

A selection panel will be established to assess your suitability against the advertised role.

If a merit pool is established it will be valid for 18 months from date it first appeared in the APS Gazette.
