Summary

The Associate Director for Patient Care Services is the Nurse Executive for South Texas Veterans Health Care System. She/he is responsible for the practice of nursing 24/7 by registered nurses advance practice nurses and allied health staff (LVNs NAs Health Techs etc.).

The Associate Director for Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive (ADPCS/NE) is the top executive within nursing and is a key member of the executive leadership team of the organization involved in strategic planning organizational assessment and program development. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive has the authority and responsibility for establishing standards of nursing practice and ensuring the continuous and timely availability of quality nursing services. She/he is the chief spokesperson for organized nursing services and is the catalyst for the integration and collaboration of nursing with other professional disciplines and functional areas in the mutual achievement of patient-centered and organizational goals.

The Associate Director for Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive will exercise final authority and approval over nursing functional statements/job descriptions nursing care policies and procedures; nursing standards of patient care treatment and services; standards of nursing practice; nurse staffing plans; and standards to measure assess and improve patient outcomes.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm OR 08:00am - 4:30pm

Requirements

Conditions of employment

    • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

    Qualifications

    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

    Basic Requirements:

    NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.

    The following Scope Education and Dimension criteria must be met to qualify for Nurse V:
    • Scope: Practice of an executive nature comprised of complex leadership and administrative components associated with critical health care issues and activities that drive meeting the organizational mission health care and policy.
    • Education: Masters degree in Nursing (MSN) and 5 years of professional nursing experience one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse IV and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse V; OR Masters degree in a *related field with a BSN and 5 years of professional nursing experience one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse IV and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse V; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing and 4 years of professional nursing experience one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse IV and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse V; OR a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN and 4 years of professional nursing experience one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse IV and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse V. *Note: Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees.
    • Dimension Requirements:

Advances nursing knowledge through health science research and the translation and dissemination of evidence into practice to maximize the value to Veterans the community and the health care industry.
    Preferred Experience:
    • Current full active and unrestricted in any US State Commonwealth Territory or the District of Columbia
    • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or masters in a field related to nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Bridge Program with 5-6 years of experience
    • Doctoral degree in nursing or in a field related to nursing with 4-5 years of experience
    • Verbal and written English language proficiency
    • Certifications preferred: Nurse Executive (NE-BC) Nurse Executive-Advanced (NEA-BC) Certified in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) or Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE)
    • Executive Level Management experience
    Reference: For more information on this qualification standard please visit Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the young adult ages 18-44 middle adult ages 45 - 64 and older adult ages 65 and older. AVAHCS is an interdisciplinary teaching facility with inpatient and outpatient services for Veterans with surgical medical and psychiatric needs. Primary Care is provided at the main campus with four (4) community- based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). This position requires visual acuity keen hearing clear distinctive speech and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking standing stooping sitting bending pulling and pushing. The incumbent must be a mature flexible sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on facility needs.

    Education

    The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) must be fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission On Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Verification of accreditation may be obtained from or your school has changed names or is no longer in existence you must provide this information in your application.
