Job Summary

Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is the worlds largest museum education and research complex with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture.

Duties

This position is located in the Information Technology Office (ITO) NMAAHC Smithsonian Institution and is responsible forproviding assistance and support for installing configuring troubleshooting and maintaining hardware and software to ensure the availability and functionality of the Museums IT systems.

Duties include:

Installing configuring troubleshooting testing and maintaining hardware and software to ensure the availability and functionality of NMAAHCs IT systems.

Performing basic administrative duties related to the system administration of IT systems assists with licensing renewals and replacement as well as IT purchases.

Providing customer service and technical assistance to customers on computer and other IT related problems.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
For all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  • Oral Communication- Expresses information (for example ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example technical sensitive controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others attends to nonverbal cues and responds appropriately.
  • Problem Solving- Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience:You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service.For this position specialized experience is defined asdemonstrated experiencetroubleshooting various devices; installing network operating systems and network protocols; testing network software and utilizing various tools to monitor system performance; performing system backups and restorations; and assisting with licensing renewals and IT-related purchases.

Superior Academic Achievement Provisions: A Bachelors degree incomputer science engineering information science information systems management mathematics operations research statistics or technology managementordegree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications systems or networks. plus at least one of the following superior academic achievement provisions:

1. A grade-point average (GPA) of B (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses or courses completed in the last two years of undergraduate curriculum;
or

2. A grade-point average (GPA) of B (3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for the required courses in your major field of study or required courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; or

3. Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college university or major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; or

4. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society other than freshman honor societies. Honor societies that have been approved are listed in the American College of Honor Societies. Booklet of Information (1992-95) and/or Bairds Manual of American College Fraternities (1991).
