The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) as part of the Department of Climate Change Energy the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technical Services Officer to join the BCT to join the Conservation Management Program team and be a key contributor in supporting on ground delivery of BCT programs across the state delivering private land conservation outcomes for the people of NSW.

About the role

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Senior Technical Services Officer to join the Agreements & Technical Services (ATS) team. This role is a maternity-leave backfill and plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy reliability and continuous improvement of the technical and spatial systems that underpin Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) programs across the state.

Working closely with other spatial tool and data management experts in ATS and project delivery staff you will bring a hybrid skillset combining ecological understanding spatial capability and strong technical/data management expertise. As the Senior Technical Services Officer you will contribute to a broad range of technical and operational priorities including:

  • Providing technical support and analysis for Conservation Management Program campaigns ensuring data integrity spatial accuracy and reliable delivery under tight timeframes.
  • Enhancing the BCT Spatial Information System Data Assets including progressing long-standing data curation and ETL.
  • Supporting the ingestion of legacy agreement data into BCT systems ensuring quality accuracy and alignment with operational needs.
  • Leading updates to spatial-related SOPs and policies ensuring documentation is accurate usable and aligned with evolving program needs.
  • Supporting the development of automations helping to streamline workflows and improve system efficiency across ATS.
  • Delivering spatial training and capability uplift for the broader BCT staff building organisational confidence and competency in spatial tools and data.

About You

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • Strong spatial and technical skills particularly in environmental ecological or land management contexts.
  • Experience working with large or complex datasets including cleansing and transforming data developing and troubleshooting processing workflows using FME.
  • Knowledge of ESRI software including ArcMap ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online including Survey123 and Field Maps.
  • Knowledge of ecological concepts and the ability to apply this understanding in spatial and technical environments.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to deliver training update documentation and coordinate with ICT and technical partners.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work sidebyside with ecological and technical colleagues to deliver highquality outcomes.

Essential requirements

  • Tertiary qualification and/or experience in data management principles within a geodatabase including schema development and management building models and scripts to help manage data in accordance within defined standards.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills and experience with both raster and vector based GIS including ESRI products and an understanding of GIS modelling techniques.

The New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.

The Trusts roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land guided by the governments Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of appreciation and understanding of biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.

We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) and the BCTs private land conservation (PLC) programs

The successful applicant for this role will be required to declare any conflict of interests related to the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme as defined in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme Conflict of Interests Protocol. This ensures the department is made aware of potential conflicts of interest so they can be appropriately managed.

Where an applicant has a high-risk defined interest in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme they may be required to divest this interest before being employed by the department.
