This City of Tukwila is in search of a part-time Parks Maintenance Worker (.75). The Parks Maintenance Worker maintains public parks landscapes and facilities to ensure they are safe clean and operational; includinglandscaping mowing planting maintaining irrigation systems cleaning restrooms repairing playground equipment removing litter and operating machinery.

About the Department

The City of Tukwilas Parks and Recreation Department is home to 159 acres of parks 12 miles of trails Foster Golf Links and the Tukwila Community Center. The department develops and maintains parks and facilities and offers a wide range of recreational events programs and services for all ages.

We are currently accepting applications for a Parks Maintenance Worker in the Parks and Recreation Department. The Parks Maintenance Worker is a part time position and will perform routine tasks and is also responsible for doing park rounds ensuring the sites are neat and tidy.

Salary Range:
$31.20 - $37.93 per hour. This position is represented by the Teamsters 763.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of manual semi-skilled and routine maintenance activities in the care and upkeep of City parks open spaces landscaped areas and recreational facilities.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand tools power tools and light equipment including mowers backpack blowers line trimmers edgers and related small equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Performs general grounds maintenance activities including mowing edging trimming pruning watering planting mulching and basic horticultural care of turf trees shrubs and landscaped areas.
  • Assists with horticultural and vegetation management activities including weed control invasive plant removal and application of fertilizers or pesticides in accordance with safety guidelines and supervision.
  • Conducts graffiti remediation and surface cleaning on park structures signage restrooms and site furnishings.
  • Performs litter control and waste management duties including trash and recycling collection disposal and site clean-up to ensure parks remain clean safe and welcoming.
  • Provides basic janitorial services for park facilities and shelters including cleaning restrooms shelters and common use areas as assigned.
  • Assists with event support and facility preparation including shelter set-ups table and chair placement barricades and post-event clean-up.
  • Support and assist other Parks Maintenance staff and crews performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work including special projects and seasonal assignments.
  • Conducts visual inspections of park grounds facilities and equipment to identify maintenance needs safety concerns or damage and reports findings to supervisors.
  • Follows established safety procedures policies and best practices including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe equipment operation.
  • Responds to weather-related or emergency maintenance needs assigned including storm clean-up debris removal or other time-sensitive tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support Parks Maintenance operations.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

SKILLS

  • Ability to safely use hand tools and power equipment (e.g. brooms shovels trimmers mowers pressure washers basic power tools)
  • Skill in basic grounds and landscape maintenance including mowing edging and debris removal
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs to street fixtures lighting and related infrastructure under supervision
  • Skill in setting up traffic control devices barricades cones and signage according to direction
  • Effective time management and ability to complete tasks efficiently in a fast-paced outdoor environment
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and comply with safety procedures
  • Basic communication skills to coordinate with supervisors coworkers and the public

KNOWLEDGE

  • Basic knowledge of street maintenance and public right-of-way upkeep
  • Awareness of workplace safety practices including proper lifting techniques and hazard awareness
  • Basic understanding of traffic control principles and pedestrian safety (training provided)
  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance practices including seasonal care and irrigation basics
  • Familiarity with ADA accessibility concepts such as curb ramps and pedestrian pathways (training provided)
  • Understanding of equipment operation and maintenance safety guidelines
  • Awareness of environmental best practices for litter waste and graffiti removal

ABILITIES

Positions in this class typically require: climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling reaching standing mobility pushing pulling lifting grasping feeling talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.

HEAVY WORK:

Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including lifting bending standing walking and repetitive motions for extended periods
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat cold rain and wind
  • Ability to work safely around traffic construction zones and public spaces
  • Ability to adapt to changing work assignments and respond to urgent or time-sensitive tasks
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team with limited supervision
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail while performing routine maintenance tasks
  • Ability to remain professional and courteous when interacting with the public during events or street operations

Education Experience and Other Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
(A) Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers License;
(B) Must be able to work with limited supervision.
(C)Clean driving record as defined below
(D) Must be at least 18 years of age

The ability to obtain additional certifications within six months of hire is strongly encouraged:

  • Forklift Certification
  • Required FEMA Trainings
Definition: Clean Driving Record

For purposes of this position a clean driving record means:

  • A driving history that meets the Citys risk management and insurance eligibility requirements
  • No disqualifying driving offenses within the past three (3) years including but not limited to:
    • Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Physical Control
    • Reckless driving
    • Hit-and-run
    • Vehicular assault or vehicular homicide
    • Driving with a suspended revoked or invalid license
  • No pattern of unsafe driving such as multiple moving violations that would indicate unsafe operation of a motor vehicle
  • Ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) review conducted in accordance with:
    • Washington State law
    • Federal motor vehicle safety standards (as applicable)
    • City policies and insurance requirements
