The History Department at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications and expressions of interest from qualified candidates for appointment as the inaugural George and Bernice Wyss Phillipp Professor of History. Endowed professorships are among the highest honors at the seek a historian with a record of distinguished scholarly achievement and with demonstrated research and teaching expertise in the History of Science. We welcome nominations and inquiries from colleagues with expertise in any area of the history of science including but not limited to:
Scientific knowledge production and exchanges in imperial trans-national and cross-cultural contexts.
History of medicine public health and the body including practices policies and lived experiences.
Intersectionsof science with race gender and class with attention to structures of power and inequality.
Indigenous knowledge systems epistemologies and their dynamic interactions with scientific practices and local traditions.
We are especially interested in acolleague who can build bridges across disciplines enrich and expand our curriculum and strengthen the presence of the history of science within the broader liberal arts.
The Phillipp Professor will be qualified for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Department of History at the College of the Holy Cross and will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and an internationally significant academic profile. The teaching load for this position is 3 courses per year. The salary and benefits as well as sabbatical leave and research support policies are nationally competitive. The nine-month base salary will be not less than $170000. We anticipate that the Phillipp Professor will begin work at the College in August 2026 or August 2027.
