Job Summary

The Position

Class Code 29299: Geographic Information Systems Technician Level I/II

Transfer job postings are for County of Sacramento employees only.
In order to be qualified for a transfer:

1. You must meet the Minimum Qualifications of the new job.
2. The difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.

There are three different transfer types that you may qualify for: interdepartmental transfer interclass transfer and voluntary demotion. These different transfer types are defined as:

  • Interdepartmental transfer - a transfer in the same class from one County department to another.
  • Interclass transfer - a transfer from one job class to a different job addition the difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.
  • Voluntary demotion - a transfer into a job class that pays less than 95% of your current class salary.
If you are requesting an interclass transfer or voluntary demotion either action is a change in class. Whether the change is a transfer or a demotion depends upon the difference between the maximum salary rates of the requested and incumbent classes. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.294 or the applicable labor agreement sets the criteria for determining the maximum difference allowed. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.228 defines demotion.

Level I - $4798.92 - $5834.25/month
Level II - $5279.17 - $6417.12/month


The Geographic Information Systems Technician (Level I/II) performs technical duties in support of the Countys Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its users and/or other County departments. Incumbents create maintain and publish maps and other geographic source data in both spatial and tabular form for use by County departments other public agencies and the public.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Automated drafting and mapping tools and programs including AutoCAD software ESRI-based GIS software and their applications
  • Basic GIS cartography and engineering drafting concepts including map projections and scales
  • Principles practices and regulatory requirements for parcel and map creation and maintenance
  • GIS data maintenance and conversion techniques
  • Data manipulation procedures for GIS
  • Principles of algebra geometry and trigonometry related to the computation of distances angles and areas
  • Principles and practices of technical problem solving
  • Principles and practices of effective record keeping
  • Modern office procedures methods and equipment
  • Personal computer operating systems
  • Principles and practices of effective customer service including verbal and written communication
  • Land surveying and legal descriptions
Ability to
  • Use various GIS related software in order to locate input and adjust spatial and tabular data
  • Use computerized editing and mapping tools in order to prepare maps accurately delineating feature locations and boundaries
  • Perform mathematical computations
  • Visualize spatial relationships
  • Read and interpret surveys legal descriptions maps and aerial photographs
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with others verbally and in writing; follow instructions verbally and in writing
  • Troubleshoot problems with GIS related software; identify and locate the source of the problem; diagnose problem and develop logical reliable solutions; and initiate corrective actions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered during the course of the work
  • Work independently and as a cooperative contributing member of a team
  • Prioritize multiple tasks and complete work assignments in a timely manner

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either: An Certificate of Achievement or higher from an accredited college or university in Drafting Geographic Information Systems Geography Cartography Civil Engineering Computer Science Information Technology or other field closely related to the intent of the class.

Or: One (1) year of full-time paid experience performing Geographic Information Systems or mapping related duties such as entering data or creating parcel maps and producing finished products using a Geographic Information Systems and/or AutoCAD software.

Note: If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Criminal History and Background Checks:
The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602 Personnel Policies and Procedures B-5 and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks credit history checks where authorized by Labor Code section 1024.5 Social Security Number verification professional license/registration verification military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection obtaining such information the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

License Requirement:
A valid California Driver License Class C or higher may be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement.
