The Position
Class Code 28006: Food Service Worker
Transfer job postings are for County of Sacramento employees only.
In order to be qualified for a transfer:
1. You must meet the Minimum Qualifications of the new job.
2. The difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.
There are three different transfer types that you may qualify for: interdepartmental transfer interclass transfer and voluntary demotion. These different transfer types are defined as:
- Interdepartmental transfer - a transfer in the same class from one County department to another.
- Interclass transfer - a transfer from one job class to a different job addition the difference between the top salary steps (the highest pay rate within the range of pay) of your current job class and the job class that you intend to transfer into must be less than 5%.
- Voluntary demotion - a transfer into a job class that pays less than 95% of your current class salary.
If you are requesting an interclass transfer or voluntary demotion either action is a change in class. Whether the change is a transfer or a demotion depends upon the difference between the maximum salary rates of the requested and incumbent classes. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.294 or the applicable labor agreement sets the criteria for determining the maximum difference allowed. Personnel Ordinance Section 2.78.228 defines demotion.
Under supervision the Food Service Worker assists in preparing and serving food; cleans and maintains kitchen facilities.Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

- Learn the methods materials and equipment used to prepare and serve food
- Learn the proper cleaning methods and materials used to maintain kitchen and related utensils dishes and equipment in a sanitary manner
- Learn the proper food safety procedures used in preparing handling serving and storing food and cleaning kitchen facilities
- Learn to measure food portions and serve food
- Follow verbal and written instructions
- Read write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance
- Work as a team member
- Maintain an organized work and storage area
- Learn to recognize and adhere to individual dietary restrictions

General Qualifications
Criminal History and Background Checks:
The County may access criminal history information on all candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602 Personnel Policies and Procedure B-5 and applicable federal and state law. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.
The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks credit history checks where authorized by Labor Code 1024.5 Social Security Number verification professional license/registration verification military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection obtaining such information the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.
License Requirement:
A valid California Driver License Class C or higher may be required at the time of appointment. Failure to obtain or maintain the appropriate California Driver License may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
ServSafe Certificate:
Some positions may be required to obtain and maintain a ServSafe California Food Handler Card within thirty (30) days of appointment. Failure to obtain and maintain the appropriate certificates may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rules and/or applicable bargaining agreement.
Physical Requirements:
Some positions in this class require the incumbent to:
Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
Be able to stoop and turn to lift items from floor level.
Have the physical stamina to withstand a normal work day which is typically filled with physical activity/exertion.
The following may be performed with assistance as needed:
Lift items up to 20 pounds above ones head.
Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds up to ones shoulder.
Push and pull wheeled carts requiring up to 50 pounds of exerted force.
Individuals who do not meet these requirements due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Working Conditions:
Some positions in this class require the incumbent to:
Work in an area that may not have heating or air conditioning throughout a normal work day.
Work with inmates or interact with mental health patients.
Work weekends nights and holidays.
Immerse hands and lower arms in hot water; may be sprayed with hot water.
Other Requirements:
All positions in this class require tuberculin clearance.
