Pima County Regional Wastewater Department is seeking three Operations and Maintenance Technicians III (O&M) to join the team. O&M Technician III is responsible for safely operating and monitoring selected equipment involved in the treatment processing and resource reclamation of wastewater and this role you will ensure the continuity of wastewater treatment operations by performing preventive maintenance and adjustments to equipment and systems including pumps motors blowers chemical feed equipment sludge equipment and basic laboratory equipment. This position is also responsible for collecting and analyzing wastewater samples and recording data relating to the operations and maintenance of equipment and treatment processes.

Work assignments shifts and locations will vary depending on the departments needs and will be communicated to the incumbent by the supervisor/treatment management.

Essential Functions:

  • O&M Technician III is expected to perform all duties and responsibilities of the O&M Technician - Level I and Level II;

  • Follows all safety procedures including proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) and confined space procedures;

  • Operates and trains staff on new and advanced wastewater and solids treatment processing equipment and systems;

  • Uses advanced operating principles of facility Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and computerized maintenance management systems;

  • Uses intermediate level algebra and other mathematical calculations;

  • Collects and analyzes wastewater samples in field and laboratory settings reports results;

  • Interprets readings on metering/process control devices and testing/analysis results and adjusts equipment and machinery operations as necessary;

  • Evaluates troubleshoots and adjusts all equipment and processes involved in the treatment and processing of wastewater and its byproducts including solids gas service water and side streams;

  • Makes process control recommendations to the Supervisor and/or management team based on field observations and laboratory results;

  • Prepares for and responds to process and equipment changes when placing equipment into or out of service hydraulic loading events and other plant emergencies;

  • Assists with data table/spreadsheet creation &/or modification;

  • Assists in performing most duties of O&M Supervisors including conducting tours of facilities;

  • Assist in generating daily weekly and monthly plant highlight reports or other reports to management;

  • Performs QA/QC on lab processes and data;

  • Maintains a safe clean and orderly work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency a valid Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 3 (or higher) Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification at least 3 years of experience in the operation of an advanced complex wastewater/water facility or related industry/facility with at least 2 years as an operator at a Grade 3 or 4 wastewater facility (Section R).

(Relevant experience training and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted for experience.)

  • Minimum three (3) years experience performing preventative maintenance at a water/wastewater facility or similar.

  • Additional ADEQ Certification/s (Collections/Water Treatment/Water Distribution).

  • Minimum three (3) years experience with Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisition (SCADA) or comparable system control operation software.

  • Minimum two (2) years as an O&M Technician with Pima County Wastewater Reclamation Department.

  • Minimum two (2) years experience assisting with facility on-the-job training (OJT).

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates:Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at time of application or prior to completion of an initial or promotional probation period. Failure to obtain/maintain the required certification/licensures shall be grounds for termination. All positions require a valid Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade 3 Wastewater Treatment System Operator certification. If an applicant has an equivalent certification from another state certification through reciprocity with ADEQ must be obtained within 3 months of hire or promotion.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may carry the risk of exposure to infectious diseases asbestos or wastewater products; therefore special medical screening prior to or during employment may be necessary to assure employee health and safety.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: All positions require sufficient body flexibility mobility stamina and balance to allow for standing walking sitting grasping and manipulation of objects frequent bending stooping reaching climbing stairs and ladders. All positions require regular or occasional crawling kneeling squatting lifting/carrying objects up to fifty pounds pushing and pulling of objects up to seventy-five pounds and the ability to properly don and doff fall protection to enter and work in confined spaces. Essential to this position is corrected or sufficient vision; the ability to see read and interpret written information manuals gauges etc. including distinguishing various colors. Also essential to this position is corrected or sufficient hearing; the ability to hear and comprehend voice communications in-person over a radio and phone and to hear operating equipment.

Working Conditions: Some positions require on-call rotations. All positions require the operation of machinery powered industrial equipment and motor vehicles. All positions require outdoor work including during inclement and hot weather and exposure to waterborne pathogens/agents hazardous materials and gases water hazards and wet/slippery surfaces odors fumes humidity dirt dust traffic hazards venomous pests uneven surfaces and electric arc flash potential.
