Description of Work
This position serves as a Transportation Supervisor I for the Robeson County Maintenance Unit. Position responsible for supervision of one or more crews in the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads including but not limited to: working in and around heavy traffic near heavy equipment and with power tools to perform pavement patching drainage maintenance shoulder repair paved and unpaved roadway maintenance vegetation management snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. Position will assist management with investigating and answering concerns from the public. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations and work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes utilizing NCDOT required Proper Protective Equipment following OSHR and NCDOT Safety Policy and Procedure Manual. The recommended applicant must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Position is responsible for assisting management with the counsel and discipline of employees; monitoring expenditures; maintaining work records time sheets job reports and inventory records; planning work operations and adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; conducting performance reviews; assisting with interviewing and recommending new staff. Position responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required. Position must routinely determine materials techniques and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: $50633 - $88607
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Experience in road maintenance and repair as well as maintenance equipment operation.
Experience in record keeping such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.
Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations.
Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
Experience in planning work and supervising work crew.
Additional Expectations:
Ability to supervise work crews and promote safe work environment. Ability to maintain working knowledge of all operating procedures and understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Ability to plan monitor and ensure safety standards are followed. Ability to complete daily documentation of personnel material and equipment usage. Ability to investigate and respond to public inquiries. Employee must have the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. climb bend traverse steep and uneven terrain and work in extreme temperature conditions. Candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date or be in possession of a current Class A Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire or the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug screening is required for this position. A release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
