We are seeking aArchitect for Medium Voltage (MV) rated electronic hardware (typically 1 kV to 35 kV) to lead the architecture and development of next-generation power conversion equipment for grid-scale applications. This leader will combine deep hands-on engineering experience with system-level architecture to define product roadmaps drive end-to-end designs engage with customers and utilities and guide teams through innovation development validation certification and successful launch.
Youll advise the technical direction for MV equipment including power conversion (e.g. MV inverters/PCS) transformers protection & control insulation systems and interface requirements for utility interconnection. You will collaborate cross-functionally with Product Manufacturing Quality Supply Chain and Field Service to deliver robust cost-effective and certifiable products.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Architecture & System Design
- Define end-to-end architecture for MV electronic hardware systems: topology component selection insulation coordination creepage/clearance dielectric barriers thermal management EMI/EMC strategy and safety.
- Architect grid-tied MV power conversion solutions including front-end rectifiers/inverters MV transformers relaying/protection auxiliary power systems and controls.
- Translate customer utility and regulatory requirements into system and subsystem specifications; own the Requirements DVP&R and Safety Case.
Hands-on Engineering & Technical Leadership
- Lead and participate in hands-on design: schematics electrical circuit design MV busbar structures partial discharge mitigation surge protection grounding/bonding and HV PCB layout practices.
- Guide FEA/thermal/electromagnetic analyses; review models and prototypes; oversee DFMEA/PFMEA reliability prediction (MTBF/Weibull) HALT/HASS and failure analysis.
- Establish design standards templates and best practices for MV equipment; coach engineers and review critical design artifacts.
Customer & Utility Interface
- Engage directly with customers EPCs and utilities to capture use cases grid codes protection schemes and site constraints; lead technical workshops and design reviews.
Program Leadership & Cross-Functional Execution
- Advise product from concept to launch: technology downselect make/buy supplier selection design verification/validation certification testing manufacturability and cost-out.
- Collaborate with Compliance to plan and execute certification and type tests (e.g. dielectric impulse short-circuit temperature rise EMC).
Standards Safety & Compliance
- Ensure designs meet relevant standards and codes (examples below) and internal safety policies.
- Identify and help shape evolving standards consistent with customer and Enphase needs.
- Advise development of documentation: architecture descriptions interface control documents (ICDs) protection & coordination studies commissioning procedures and user manuals.
WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelors in Electrical Engineering (Power Electronics Power Systems or related). Masters or Ph.D. preferred.
- 10 years of hands-on design experience with MV equipment (1 kV35 kV): MV power converters switchgear transformers relaying/protection or MV distribution equipment.
- Proven experience architecting grid-scale power electronics or MV systems (e.g. utility-scale BESS PCS MV motor drives HV rectifiers FACTS HVDC/HV traction).
- Deep knowledge of insulation coordination partial discharge creepage/clearance surge withstand corona mitigation and dielectric testing.
- Strong background in power devices snubbers commutation loops and low-inductance bus structures.
- Proficiency with EMI/EMC design and compliance (conducted/radiated emissions immunity filtering shielding bonding).
- Experience with protection & relaying coordination studies and MV switchgear integration (ANSI/IEC).
- Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional product development and successful product launch.
- Excellent communication skills for customer interface technical presentations and executive updates.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with utility interconnection and grid codes (e.g. IEEE 1547 UL 1741 for PCS; country-specific equivalents).
- Knowledge of MV standards and practices:
- ANSI/IEEE: C37 series (switchgear & breakers) IEEE 1584 (arc flash) IEEE C62 (surge arresters) IEEE 242/399 (protection/coordination) IEEE 519 (harmonics).
- IEC: 62271 (HV switchgear/controlgear) 60664 (insulation coordination) 60060 (HV test techniques) 61000 series (EMC)(drives safety) 60076 (power transformers).
- UL/CSA/NEMA: UL 347 (MV industrial control equipment) UL 508C/IEC 61800 for drives UL 1741/CSA equivalents for grid-tied PCS NEMA ratings.
- NFPA: 70 (NEC) 70E (electrical safety).
- Experience in MV PCS integration MV switchgear pad-mount transformers protective relays SCADA and utility interconnects.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering (DVP&R DFMEA/PFMEA HALT/HASS) design controls (ISO 9001) and safety lifecycle (functional safety SIL concepts if applicable).
- Tools: Power electronics simulation (PLECS/PSIM/Matlab/Simulink) electromagnetic/thermal FEA PCB CAD relay coordination tools (ETAP/SKMs) and scripting for data analysis.
- Experience with manufacturing for MV hardware: buswork encapsulation/potting cast resin partial discharge test setups and high-voltage lab procedures.
- Track record of supplier development (transformers busbars capacitors relays breakers arresters) and design-to-cost.
