Our client a national electrical services organization is seeking an experienced Protection & Control (P&C) Field Services Technician to support testing and energization projects across Texas and Louisiana. This role supports commissioning and maintenance work on utility substations industrial facilities and bulk power systems. The technician will contribute to field execution safety compliance and technical quality while supporting project teams in a growing power delivery practice.
Role Overview
This position supports electrical testing and commissioning activities by applying client specifications manufacturer guidance and industry standards (such as IEEE NETA and NFPA). The role operates with limited supervision and is responsible for executing moderately complex assignments while maintaining strong safety documentation and data integrity practices.
The technician will work alongside field leadership to resolve on-site challenges assist with project execution and provide informal guidance to junior staff when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Execute protection and control testing and commissioning activities on high-voltage substations
Perform hands-on relay testing using modern relay test equipment (e.g. Omicron or Doble platforms)
Test protective relays including line transformer feeder and bus protection schemes
Record field activities using digital tools reports and standardized forms
Maintain and organize test equipment tools and materials
Assist field supervisors and project leads with daily execution
Identify abnormal conditions and escalate technical issues when appropriate
Participate in daily safety briefings and comply with site safety rules
Communicate progress risks and delays to project leadership
Review work completed by junior technicians for accuracy and completeness
Maintain accurate logs photographs and labeling documentation
Coordinate with other technicians to ensure safe and efficient workflow
Observe subcontractor work and report issues to field leadership
Complete administrative duties such as time entry and expense documentation
Act ethically and responsibly with company resources and follow organizational policies
Perform additional field or support duties as business needs require
Requirements
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical testing and field services
Experience with medium- and high-voltage equipment including breakers transformers instrument transformers and P&C systems
Strong knowledge of protective relay systems across transmission distribution and generation applications
Experience testing modern digital relays from major manufacturers
Proficiency with relay test equipment and techniques including:
Calibration and functional testing
CT/PT circuit verification
Settings uploads and logic testing
Static and dynamic relay testing
Familiarity with industry standards such as NETA IEEE and NFPA
Experience working on systems ranging approximately from 15 kV through extra-high voltage levels
Working knowledge of relay testing and reporting software platforms
Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics
Strong troubleshooting and field problem-solving skills
Experience preparing technical reports and field documentation
Ability to work outdoors and in physically demanding environments
Experience working with contractors engineers and technicians
Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality standards
Effective verbal communication skills
Ability to analyze test results and apply sound technical judgment
Comfortable working in fast-paced and changing environments
Strong organizational skills and ability to follow procedures
Interest in continued technical development
Understanding of ethical and confidential work practices
Self-directed with attention to detail and task prioritization
Reliable attendance and punctuality
Ability to meet company safety and conduct policies
Capable of lifting up to 35 lbs independently and heavier loads with assistance
