POSITION: Camp Counselor IV Assistant Director
REPORTS TO: Director Camp
STATUS: Seasonal Full-Time Exempt Camp Worker (as defined in Section 18897 of the Health and Safety Code) Will be needed approximately Mid-June to Mid-August. Final dates will be confirmed at offer.

Founded in San Francisco in 1902 the LightHouses purpose is to promote the independence equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW:
The assistant director will design and deliver program activities that are safe fun and appropriate to the campers abilities and age. He/she will assist in the management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the camp director. The assistant director assists in the overall administration and operation of camp. He/she will be placed in charge in the event of the directors absence.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School graduate
- Some college education preferred
- Previous work in a camp school or community service setting
- Experience in administrative roles at a similar camp
- Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities
- Training and experience in teaching program to adults and children
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
- Experience with persons who are blind/visually impaired or similar population
- Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Development & Delivery
- Ensure a fun engaging inclusive and well-organized program that meets camp outcomes and camper abilities.
- Independently plan implement and evaluate lessons and activities demonstrating strong preparation and follow-through.
- Support staff in delivering progressive age-appropriate programming through clear expectations timelines and guidance.
- Assess program success and camper skill development using observations documentation and feedback.
- Coordinate camp-wide programs and campfire activities in collaboration with other staff requiring advance planning and cross-team coordination.
Safety Training & Compliance
- Ensure staff and campers consistently follow safety supervision and educational procedures across all camp programs.
- Assist in staff training emphasizing safety protocols clear communication and best practices.
- Provide clear written and verbal guidelines for activities involving camp equipment.
- Enforce safety protocols across all program areas and adapt plans as conditions change.
Facility & Equipment Management
- Oversee the maintenance organization and cleanliness of program areas.
- Conduct daily safety and condition checks on equipment and facilities documenting concerns and follow-up actions.
- Ensure program areas remain hazard-free and respond promptly to maintenance or safety issues.
Supervision Leadership & Staff Development
- Lead monitor and evaluate program area leaders providing timely feedback and clear direction.
- Demonstrate strong executive functioning skills including the ability to prioritize tasks manage multiple responsibilities and follow through on commitments.
- Provide performance observations and recommendations to the Camp Director in a clear organized and timely manner.
- Support and mentor staff in effective program delivery planning and problem-solving.
Scheduling Administration & Executive Functioning
- Develop manage and adapt schedules for campers groups and staff often in fast-paced or changing environments.
- Maintain accurate and organized program records schedules lesson plans and reports.
- Demonstrate a high level of executive functioning including:
- Planning ahead and meeting deadlines
- Managing competing priorities and multitasking effectively
- Remembering and following multi-step instructions
- Adapting plans in response to changing camper needs or operational demands
- Completing tasks independently with strong attention to detail and follow-through
- Report on program and activity performance to inform continuous improvement.
Technology & Communication Requirements
- Demonstrate strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word Excel and email as well as other common workplace software.
- Use technology effectively to create schedules lesson plans reports tracking documents and written communications.
- Maintain organized digital files and documentation in shared systems.
- Communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally with camp leadership and staff.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain clear professional and timely communication with all camp staff.
- Facilitate daily check-ins with head counselors and area leaders ensuring alignment and accountability.
- Attend and actively participate in all administrative planning and staff meetings.
Camper & Staff Engagement
- Participate enthusiastically in camp activities while providing consistent leadership and guidance.
- Support and supervise evening programs special events overnights and all-camp activities.
- Contribute ongoing program ideas and improvements based on observation feedback and reflection.
- Support camper and staff survey efforts and assist with data collection as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be willing to live on camp premises
- Must be able to lift 70 pounds
- Ability to enforce safety and emergency procedures
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situation requiring first aid
- Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire evacuation illness or injury)
- Possess the endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
