Senior Technical Product Manager
Genomics England partners with the NHS to deliver whole genome sequencing diagnostics for patients with rare disease and cancer. Each genome represents an extraordinary volume of complex data that must be analysed by Clinical Scientists across regional hubs in England to determine whether there is a genetic basis to a patients condition.
As a Senior Technical Product Manager you will own and evolve data focused backend and platform capabilities that underpin the Healthcare Genomic Service. These products are built on modern cloud infrastructure API enabled architectures and shared platform services and are relied on by multiple teams across Genomics England.
This is an exciting senior role for someone who really enjoys shaping and running live systems making complex data accessible and understanding how platform decisions multiply value across teams. You will work closely with engineers scientists clinicians and delivery partners operating in a highly regulated environment where quality security and auditability matter.
Everyday responsibilities include:
Owning and evolving data focused technical products including existing live services used by multiple teams.
Defining product vision strategy and outcomes for your product area aligned to organisational priorities.
Setting and owning squad OKRs translating them into clear roadmaps and backlogs that balance BAU technical improvement and new capability.
Managing products across multiple stages of the lifecycle from enhancement and scale through to maintenance and strategic migration.
Working with technical leads to shape API enabled architectures that scale value encourage adoption and abstract complexity for consumers.
Understanding and articulating the long-term and cross team impact of platform and architectural design decisions.
Ensuring products operate effectively within regulated environments including compliance audit readiness and responding to assurance activities.
Using data and proxy metrics to measure internal or indirect value where direct user metrics are not available.
Collaborating across squads and product areas to shape shared capabilities reduce duplication and enable consistent platform guardrails without constraining teams.
Confidently managing multiple stakeholder groups communicating priorities trade-offs risks and progress clearly and pragmatically.
Taking ownership of problems and risks solving them quickly and decisively with input from the right perspectives.
Skills and experience for success:
Proven experience product managing data focused technical backend or platform products used by multiple teams.
Experience owning and improving shared platform services or components as products with clear roadmaps user insight and measured outcomes.
Strong understanding of modern engineering approaches including cloud-based platforms internal developer tooling SRE concepts and API driven systems.
Comfortable shaping strategic roadmaps for platform products in line with organisational architecture and longer-term strategy.
Experience defining evolution and migration paths from existing BAU systems to more strategic scalable components.
Confident balancing team autonomy with standardisation ensuring platform guardrails enable teams rather than slow them down.
Experience operating in regulated environments with a solid grasp of compliance assurance and audit requirements.
Able to define and use meaningful proxy metrics to demonstrate value for internal or indirect users.
Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence listen and collaborate across a wide range of disciplines and seniorities.
Has a technical background with demonstrable strong technical competence enabling close credible collaboration with architects and engineers.
Comfortable taking accountability for live systems making pragmatic decisions and continuously improving products already in use.

Blended working model
Genomics England operates a blended working model as we know our people appreciate the flexibility that hybrid working can bring. We expect most people to come into the office a minimum of 2 times each month. However this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. There is no expectation that people will return to the office full time unless they want to however some of our roles require full time on site attendance e.g. lab teams reception team.
Our teams and squads have and will continue to reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit beyond the minimum. Our office locations are: Canary Wharf Cambridge and Leeds.
