Job Summary

A large and well-organised 1118 secondary school in the Mansfield area is seeking an enthusiastic and reflective Early Career Teacher of English to join its English department from January 2026. This role is specifically designed for an ECT and offers an exceptionally supportive environment in which to complete the Early Career Framework while developing confidence subject expertise and classroom presence.

The school has a strong reputation locally for developing early career teachers well. Staff retention is high mentoring is taken seriously and leaders understand the pressures of the first years in teaching. ECTs are not expected to sink or swim instead they are carefully supported coached and encouraged to grow at a sustainable pace.

The Role

You will teach English across Key Stages 3 and 4 delivering a carefully sequenced curriculum that prioritises literacy clarity of expression and critical thinking. The department uses shared schemes of work and common assessments ensuring consistency and reducing unnecessary workload for new staff.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching English Language and Literature to KS3 and GCSE classes

  • Planning lessons using shared well-resourced schemes of work

  • Developing strong classroom routines with consistent support

  • Using formative assessment to inform teaching and support progress

  • Attending department meetings and ECT development sessions

You will not be expected to take on additional responsibilities during your induction period. The focus is firmly on developing strong classroom practice and confidence.

ECT Support and Induction

  • Reduced timetable in line with ECF requirements

  • Dedicated subject mentor within the English department

  • Weekly mentoring meetings focused on practical classroom strategies

  • Regular low-stakes observations with developmental feedback

  • Access to high-quality CPD and external ECT networks
