Do Epic Science
TAE is the worlds first private fusion energy company founded in 1998 to commercialize the cleanest safest most affordable and sustainable form of carbon-free power. We are applying science and engineering to design transformational technologies. Whether its harnessing fusion through the science of stars making exponential leaps in power efficiency or innovating medical care with a novel cancer treatment: Were turning the promise of science into reality.
Were looking for candidates who are passionate about realizing our mission: A future where all people have affordable access to reliable abundant and environmentally friendly fusion-generated electricity.
About the Role
- TAEs privately funded C-2W experiment (aka Norm) is the largest steady-state high beta fusion experiment in the world with a comprehensive diagnostic suite and a database of more than 70000 shots. TAE is using experimental analysis and model validation to plan and build a first-of-a-kind high beta Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP). We are seeking researchers to contribute to this effort.
- The Scientist will perform novel research in steady-state magnetically confined high-beta plasma physics including analysis of experiment model validation and predictive simulation.
- TAE has adopted the open source particle-in-cell code WarpX as a framework for integrated modeling in the FRC and has developed three new field solvers for it: hybrid PIC semi-implicit electrostatic and implicit Darwin. It is expected that the researcher will adopt WarpX as their main tool.
- Current focus areas include fast ion physics stability and operational boundaries and particle and energy transport. Global simulations will incorporate source terms including neutral beam injection electrode biasing and gas fueling.
- Ideation is highly prized at TAE and the creation of new computational methods and proposals for experiment are strongly encouraged.
About You
- Design and perform simulation campaigns for scientific discovery through interpretive simulation of experimental results and predictive simulation of future experiments.
- Perform formal verification and validation studies
- Secure resources on DOE Leadership Computing Facilities
- Collaborate with publicly funded scientists in identified areas of strategic interest.
- Contribute to code planning development performance benchmark and reliability efforts
- Documentation of work in collaboration and revision control software
- Presentation of results to the TAE physics team.
- Presentation of results to domestic and international conferences.
- Publication of approved results in peer-reviewed journals.
Required Skills:
- 6 years of experience in plasma physics applied math or computer science
- Publication in peer-reviewed journals
Technical Experience:
- Development of scientific code in collaborative environment especially using paradigms used routinely in plasma physics such as Monte Carlo particle-in-cell magnetohydrodynamics
- Discretization of differential equations and solution of discretized equations using numerical methods
Software Knowledge and Skills:
- WarpX or similar open source exascale-class particle-in-cell code
- C and python development experience
- Visualization and analysis with python
Education:
Required Education:
- Masters degree in plasma physics applied math or computer science
Preferred Education:
- PhD in plasma physics applied math or computer science
