About the role

AEMO operates in a heavily regulated environment and the Legal Team headed by the General Counsel is a trusted adviser to the business providing timely and well considered legal services and counsel.

This role will work closely with AEMOs Digital and Operations teams to support them in carrying out technology projects involving AEMOs systems.

Working with energy market and operations specialists you will support technology projects to deliver regulatory changes to improve outcomes in the long-term interests of energy consumers. You will be part of a Legal Team that supports AEMO in relation to all its functions. This work has impact at a time of great change for industry.

What you will be doing

  • Drafting and negotiating appropriate software licensing hardware purchase and outcome based professional service agreements with vendors to support the delivery of AEMOs information technology projects for systems used to perform its functions.
  • Providing high quality advice on regulatory instruments (such as legislation rules and procedures). This includes advising on AEMOs privacy security and confidentiality obligations and use of AI under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (Cth) and energy legislation.
  • Advising on the legal aspects of complex procurement processes including probity and drafting tender documentation.
  • Drafting internal information technology related guidelines and processes.
  • Establishing effective relationships with internal stakeholders and collaborating to assess and provide high quality advice on regulatory compliance and draft documents.
  • Representing AEMO effectively with external stakeholders including industry and government.
  • Managing external legal service providers.

What you will bring to the role

  • Bachelor of Laws / Juris Doctor with a minimum 7 years PQE.
  • Eligibility to practice law in an Australian jurisdiction in which AEMO operates (current practising certificate) and eligibility for Australian Government security clearance including Australian citizenship.
  • You will be working independently therefore you will have strong knowledge and demonstrated experience in information technology including procurement cyber security and emerging issues such as AI.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and innovation in solving legal and commercial problems to drive project outcomes
  • Demonstrated stakeholder focus with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders to drive outcomes.
  • Experience in Commonwealth Government procurement would be highly advantageous.
