The Role: SEN Teaching Assistant
As an SEN Teaching Assistant you will play a crucial role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning. You will work closely with class teachers SENCOs therapists and parents to support pupils academically socially and emotionally.
Your responsibilities may include:
Providing 1:1 or small-group support to pupils with special educational needs
Supporting children with ASD ADHD SEMH speech and language difficulties dyslexia and learning delays
Assisting with the implementation of EHCP targets
Helping pupils to access the curriculum in a way that meets their individual needs
Supporting emotional regulation behaviour management and social interaction
Encouraging independence confidence and positive self-esteem
Adapting resources and activities to suit individual learning styles
Monitoring progress and providing feedback to teaching staff
Supporting pupils during transitions breaktimes and structured activities
In some settings you may also assist with:
Personal care (where required and fully supported)
Sensory activities and interventions
Behaviour support plans and de-escalation strategies

You do not need to have years of experience but you do need the right mindset.

Patient calm and emotionally intelligent
Passionate about inclusive education
Reliable and committed
Confident working with children who may present challenging behaviours
Able to follow guidance while also using initiative
Strong communicators who work well as part of a team
Ideal backgrounds include (but are not limited to):
Previous SEN TA or classroom support experience
Care work youth work or support work
Psychology education or child development studies
Experience supporting children or young people with additional needs
Parents or carers with lived SEN experience
Training can be provided for the right candidates with the right attitude.
