Role Overview

We are seeking a committed patient and empathetic Behaviour Mentor to join a thriving primary school in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting childrens social emotional and behavioural development and who want to make a meaningful difference in the early years of education.

As a Behaviour Mentor you will work closely with pupils who may struggle to manage their behaviour emotions or engagement in learning. Many children you support may experience SEMH (Social Emotional and Mental Health) challenges ADHD anxiety or attachment-related difficulties. Others may find the classroom environment overwhelming and require additional pastoral support to build confidence resilience and coping strategies.

Your role is to provide consistent nurturing support enabling children to feel safe valued and capable of positive change.


Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The Behaviour Mentors purpose is to support children in developing the social and emotional skills necessary for success in school and life. This includes:

  • Proactive support: Delivering structured mentoring and small group interventions that build emotional resilience self-awareness and social skills.

  • Reactive support: Assisting pupils during moments of behavioural difficulty de-escalating conflict and helping them return to learning calmly.

The school follows trauma-informed and restorative approaches viewing challenging behaviour as a form of communication. As a Behaviour Mentor you will help children understand their emotions develop self-regulation strategies and engage positively with their peers and teachers.


Key Responsibilities

In Hemel Hempstead your responsibilities as a Behaviour Mentor will include:

  • Providing 1:1 mentoring to children who require additional behavioural or emotional support.

  • Leading small group sessions that focus on social skills resilience emotional regulation and conflict resolution.

  • Supporting children within classrooms to improve focus engagement and appropriate behaviour.

  • Assisting during break times lunchtimes and transitions providing structure and promoting positive interactions.

  • Calmly and professionally de-escalating challenging behaviour.

  • Supporting children following incidents helping them reflect repair relationships and learn positive alternatives.

  • Collaborating with teachers SENCOs pastoral staff and leadership to develop individual behaviour support plans.

  • Monitoring childrens progress maintaining accurate records and reporting outcomes to the pastoral team.

  • Encouraging restorative practices and helping pupils build problem-solving skills.

  • Maintaining safeguarding standards and upholding professional boundaries at all times.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience supporting children with behavioural or emotional challenges.

  • Ability to remain calm professional and consistent under pressure.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusion.

  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training.


Desirable Experience

  • Previous Behaviour Mentor or Teaching Assistant experience in primary schools.

  • Knowledge of SEMH ADHD or trauma-informed practice.

  • Experience delivering small group or 1:1 interventions.

  • Relevant qualifications in education pastoral care or child development.
