The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The New York City Bureau of Water Supply (BWS) seeks to hire an Industrial Hygienist II for a position within the Drinking Water Operations Directorate (DWO) located in Carmel New York. The mission of the Bureau of Water Supplys Drinking Water Operations Directorate is to actively promote and support the management and implementation of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) programs through effective communication education and continuous improvement strategies to protect public health and natural resources and ensure a safe and compliant work environment for all employees.
Under direction of the DWO EHS Officer Technical Assistant the Industrial Hygienist II will serve as the Site Safety Officer. The Site Safety Officer will be responsible for performing work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility in industrial hygiene to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing health and safety in the BWS workplace. Specific duties include:
- Providing support and technical assistance on health and safety matters to ensure that assigned facilities maintain EHS compliance with Federal State and Local regulations laws and codes and Agency and Bureau policies and guidelines.
- Ensuring that all staff reporting to the assigned facilities have information on and access to tools and skills required to conduct their job duties in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
- Performing routine highly difficult and complex safety and health investigations to verify that assigned facilities and field staff maintain EHS compliance with Federal State and Local regulations laws and codes and Agency and Bureau policies and guidelines.
- Maintaining current and accurate information in appropriate EHS tracking systems while establishing methods for tracking compliance deficiencies spill reporting and other environmental programs.
- Maintaining technical knowledge licenses and certifications may be necessary to perform all job assignments and attends all required training and EHS meetings in order to maintain knowledge of current programs and directives.
License Requirement
A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Medical Requirement
You may be required to wear a facemask or respirator while performing the essential functions of an Industrial Hygienist. As a result medical guidelines have been established for assignments that require wearing a facemask or respirator to determine whether candidates can safely wear this equipment while performing the essential functions of the position of Industrial Hygienist. Qualifications :
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in industrial hygiene environmental health science occupational health science and/or safety engineering; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 28 semester credits in the physical or natural sciences civil engineering mechanical engineering environmental engineering chemical engineering and/or toxicology and one year of satisfactory full-time experience
in the identification evaluation and control of health and safety hazards; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full-time work experience as described in 2 above; or
4. A combination of education and experience that is the equivalent of the course work and/or experience
described in 1 2 and 3 above. Semester credits from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene environmental health science occupational health science and/or safety engineering may be substituted for experience on the basis of 7 semester credits equals 6 months of experience up to a maximum of 28 semester credits. Semester credits from an accredited college or university in the physical or natural sciences civil engineering mechanical engineering environmental engineering chemical engineering and/or toxicology may be substituted for experience on the basis of 7 semester credits equals 3 months of experience up to a maximum of 28 semester credits. However all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
License Requirements

Special Note:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II individuals must have in addition to meeting the minimum requirements one year of satisfactory full-time work experience in the identification evaluation and control of health and safety hazards.
