The Door Peninsula Land Steward Intern performs and participates in preserve operations maintenance and management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Door Peninsula Land Steward Intern maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and removes exotic species. The Intern maintains tools and equipment and may open and close preserve(s) to the visiting public. Projects include:
Participating in field work to manage invasive species apply herbicide conduct timber management engage volunteers and map unique features and rare species.
Creating and maintaining Geographic Information Systems (GIS) records.
Use of mechanical and heavy equipment.
Monitoring lands owned in fee for issues such as trespass boundary encroachment and vandalism. Assist with monitoring of trail systems and signage.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
May interact with visitors.
Works under infrequent supervision.
May work in variable weather conditions at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
This position will require attendance at an intern cohort orientation in Madison Wisconsin on June 4 2026.
May attend an overnight TNC Wisconsin All Staff retreat scheduled for June.
The position is based in the Northeast Wisconsin project office in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. This is a full-time 12-week summer internship position with an approximate start date of June 1 2026. This position is paid $17.00 per hour. Housing is not provided and transportation to and from the office is the responsibility of the applicant.
We are looking for an intern who is interested in gaining hands-on experience with land stewardship and learning about conservation topics such as coniferous forest management and aquatic plant management in the ecological landscape of the Door Peninsula.
Must be either currently enrolled in college or graduated within 12 months with college-level coursework in natural resources environmental studies biology or related field.
Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower chainsaw UTV ATV or OHV two-way radio or similar equipment).
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid CPR herbicide or pesticide application).
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Experience working with members of the public.
This position requires a valid drivers license and compliance with TNCs Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles rental cars or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered high risk drivers. Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement which may include a review of the prospective employees motor vehicle record.
The pay for a candidate selected for this position is $17 per hour.
