The Opportunity

The Principal Engineer is a senior technical leadership role within the Mission Integration Operating Unit responsible for assuring the technical integrity governance and quality of engineering outcomes across complex Defence programs and capture activities. Acting as Technical Authority the role provides strategic and operational direction across Mission Integration ensuring engineering capability assurance and professional standards are consistently applied and aligned with KBR and customer regulatory frameworks.

The role leads the development and governance of engineering processes technical assurance delegations and quality systems working closely with program and project engineering leads Chief and Principal Engineers and broader Operating Units. This includes oversight of engineering deliverables review of designs and technical artefacts and provision of expert guidance to projects operating under both KBR and customer systems and procedures.

The Principal Engineer also plays a key role in shaping the professionalisation and development of the engineering workforce including workforce planning learning and development frameworks and career pathways. Working in partnership with People & Culture the role drives technical excellence capability sharing and continuous improvement across the Mission Systems portfolio in a highly regulated Defence environment.

Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the role will include but are not limited to:

  • Provides leadership and technical direction as Technical Authority across the Mission Integration Operating Unit

  • Works closely with Operational Unit and program/project engineering leads and their staff.

  • Assume responsibility for defining and governing requirements and adequateness of competences and professionalisation of the engineering and technical workforce within Mission Integration OU to meet the needs of the business.

  • Develops and maintains Mission Integration Operating Unit and ADSS engineering processes and procedures that interface with the broader KBR Quality system.

  • Manage process for delegations and approves delegations to Engineering Leaders as well as approval of the technical assurance process that covers subdelegation to the engineering and technical workforce.

  • Manage the delivery of the Technical Assurance functions including quality assurance audit analysis corrective action. reporting and lessons learnt.

  • Provide leadership and assistance to programs and projects on an as required basis including technical advice and direction and sourcing internal or external expertise as required.

  • Provide direction and guidance with developing and maintaining a framework for technical learning and development.

  • Work closely with Operational Units and People and Culture in developing the careers of technical personnel including training and professionalisation needs and potential roles.

  • Attend project status reviews.

Qualifications Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering Computer Science or a related discipline (equivalent to a 4-year Washington Accord accredited program) along with relevant professional certifications to enable professional registration.

  • Registration or immediate eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer with an Australian professional institution e.g. Engineers Australia or Professionals Australia (FIEAust CPEng PE).

  • Registration or immediate eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in Australia to satisfy the requirements of the Australian State based Acts (as applicable) and/or any Australian Federal regulations.

  • Experience of Senior level delegation with responsibility at Design Engineering Level or Compliance Verification.

  • Experience of leading large engineering teams (>12 engineers) in an operational role.

  • Professional Engineer with 15y of experience in digital systems including significant experience of Defence Engineering across multiple domains and programs. This should include direct experience of systems engineering development design validation and verification and certification across a number of complex programs.

  • A good understanding of the regulatory environment of one or more domains of Air Sea Land Space and Cyber of the Australian Defence Force.

  • A good understanding of software dominant systems integration and certification of assured software.

  • Experience of working closely with Australian Customer organisations such as Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group and Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Group and Defence Science and Technology Group.

  • Experience of working with ASDEFCON suite of contract documentation with an excellent understanding of the intent and content of the Engineering series of documents.

  • Experience of demonstration compliance to regulation for engineering capability including Test and Evaluation and Certification.

  • Proven experience as an Engineering Leader of assured and critical systems within a Defence context aerospace or other highly regulated environments.

  • Demonstrated understanding of systems engineering principles including full lifecycle management and the application of engineering and technical disciplines across complex systems.

  • Demonstrated understanding of configuration management within systems engineering including the establishment and control of baselines and the effective management of engineering change.

  • Have or be eligible for Australian Government Security Clearance (NV1 or higher).

Desirable:

  • A Masters degree in a technical or relevant subject will be valued.

  • Full system lifecycle experience across multiple program contexts including assessment of engineering change.

  • A strong understanding of relevant regulations for compliance with assured systems.

  • A strong understanding of System Safety Assurance and Assessment including Compliance Verification

  • Full lifecycle experience with focus on requirements design validation and verification

  • Strong experience in demonstrating Design Assurance and Certification.

  • Experience in leading innovation and managing uncertainty.

  • Experience of maturing new capabilities through People Process and Tools dimensions.

  • Experience of software environments is beneficial such as DevOps Agile and/or SAFe frameworks as well as familiarity with popular coding languages (eg. Python Javascript).

  • Ability to work within a complex dynamic technology environment and be comfortable with iterative approaches and challenges of emergent capability.

  • Experience with Software and Hardware Integration such as data bus interfaces real-time processing and sensor fusion.

  • Good understanding of secure resilient and interoperable communication systems.

  • Knowledge of cyber resilience threat modeling and secure systems design is an advantage.

  • Experience of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) for open interfaces and modularity is an advantage.
