The East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is a non-profit legal services organization and the community-based clinical program for Berkeley Law School committed to increasing justice through education and advocacy and building a culturally diverse workplace centered on equity. With over 50 staff 100 law students and over a $7 million annual budget EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal advocacy in Alameda County providing multimodal collaborative and holistic legal services to over 8000 clients yearly and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the local and state level.
EBCLC is seeking two (2) part-time Work-Studies from UC Berkeley Law Program for its offices in Berkeley. The Work Study would act as Administrative Assistant/Receptionist providing initial client reception and ongoing administrative support to the organization. The position is an integral part of the Administration team which includes the Director of Finance and Administration Client Operations Manager and 2 Administrative Assistants. Administrative Assistants are the first point of contact for clients seeking services either by phone or in person and must be committed to helping EBCLC operate in a barrier-free and client-centered manner. The Administrative Assistant is supervised by the Client Operations Manager.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide phone and in-person reception assessing clients eligibility and legal issues and directing them to the appropriate interval services or external referrals
Use case management software to enter client and legal issue information following appropriate intake procedures and policies for EBCLCs legal practice areas
Work collaboratively with other administrative and program support staff
Research identify update and circulate referral information for services outside the scope of those provided by EBCLC that respond to client inquiries and needs
Assist with filing of practice area case and brief service files with client satisfaction surveys and with other administrative tasks associated with EBCLCs legal services
Assist with administrative tasks in support of EBCLCs offices generally including updating staff directories circulating outreach and clinic schedules and maintaining office and staff vacation calendars
Provide meeting logistical support including arranging conference calls room reservations catering and video conference setup
Provide additional administrative support and other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Hours Needed:
Mondays: 9 am to 5 pm
Tuesdays: 9 am to noon
Wednesdays: 1 pm to 5 pm
Thursdays: 9 am to noon
Fridays: 1 pm to 5 pm
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should be prepared to commit 15-19 hours per week for 2026 in coordination with UC Berkeley Work Study Program. The ideal candidate would be an undergraduate student at Berkeley who has demonstrated a deep commitment to serving the Bay area communities.
Specific requirements include:
Attention to detail
Excellent communication skills. Fluency in Spanish Cantonese or Mandarin is desirable.
Prior administrative experience including proficient to intermediate skills with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook Word Excel and PowerPoint). Database management a plus (Legal Server).
Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion be adaptable to various competing demands and demonstrate the highest level of customer/client service and response experience with de-escalation desirable
Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of groups a sincere desire to support clients from underserved communities and commitment to social justice
