This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus Ohio office 2 days per week on Wednesdays & Thursdays.

About the Role

Were looking for a Specialist Software Engineer to join Nationwide Financial and our Annuity Technology team with a focus on Correspondence. This role is essential in enabling the generation and delivery of accurate timely and compliant communications to our memberssupporting both New Business and Post-Issue transactions.

In this role youll engineer the rules look & feel and workflow components that produce a variety of member-facing correspondence including contract packages confirms systematic letters and quarterly/yearend statements. Youll work within an agile product-centric team and collaborate closely with Product Owners Technology Analysts fellow Engineers & Quality Engineers and Business SMEs to build scalable modern correspondence solutions.

This is a hands-on engineering opportunity to work across rule engines workflow platforms and data integrationsshaping the future of how we communicate with our members.

What Youll Do

Correspondence Engineering & Delivery

• Build and enhance capabilities that consume required data to generate correspondence outputs.

• Engineer solutions to deliver correspondence to downstream applications for archiving printing or electronic delivery.

• Support all correspondence types including:

  • Systematic letters (e.g. systematic withdrawals start/stop death benefit events recurring transactions)

  • Confirms (financial transaction confirmations)

  • Contract packages

  • Quarterly and yearend statements

  • Other post-issue and regulatory communications

• Implement and maintain OpenRules logic that governs correspondence templates across product state and regulatory combinations.

• Build and optimize Spring Boot services supporting correspondence generation and integrations.

• Configure and enhance Quadient workflowssystem that manages presentation layout and orchestration of correspondence components.

Quality Collaboration & Agile Delivery

• Partner with Technology Analyst to understand data mapping business rules and user stories.

• Collaborate with Quality Engineers to ensure accurate rule execution template rendering and workflow functionality.

• Participate actively in agile ceremonies: sprint planning backlog refinement daily standups and team demos.

• Contribute to a culture of innovation continuous learning and psychological safety.

Tech Stack & Tools

• Rules Engine: OpenRules Manages logic for template selection and configuration based on product state transaction type and other parameters.

• Application Framework: Spring Boot Supports backend correspondence services integrations and orchestration.

• Correspondence Platform: Quadient Low/nocode workflow-based system controlling layout presentation and assembly of final PDF output.

• Languages & Frameworks: Java / J2EE Spring Framework

• DevOps & CI/CD: Harness Git Docker Kubernetes

• Cloud & APIs: AWS or Cloud equivalent Apigee REST/SOAP API Authorization

• Data & Storage: Oracle SQL XML JSON

• Testing & Quality: Postman Ruby Tosca

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Completion of undergraduate studies in computer science management information systems or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.

Experience: Four or more years of analysis and technology experience.

Knowledge Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java C Python JavaScript. Strong knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle complex business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.

Other criteria including leadership skills competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring managers leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
